No Pro Sports Team for Tacoma?
At least one of the firms submitting bids for a feasibility study for renovation of the Tacoma Dome doesn’t think that Tacoma stands much of a chance at getting an NBA or NHL team. That’s according to a King5.com story. According to King5, HVS Consulting took preliminary steps to assess the likelihood of Tacoma attracting a sports team. It doesn’t sound like the results look good for the city’s sports fans.
The planned feasibility study would be paid for from Tacoma Dome operating funds. Seven bids were submitted March 6; no date has been set for a plan to be selected.
If we’re not a pro-sports team kind of town, what do we do to fill the soon-to-be-sparkly-clean Dome?

I warned the city that spending the money on consultants to study the prospect of pro sports teams using the Tacoma Dome was a waste of money.
The business class at UPS could have studied this and come to the same conclusion for nothing.

Does it have to be more than a farm team? Pacific Coast hockey is pretty fun to watch, we had the Sabercats for awhile, and was it the Rockets? I can’t remember.
What about unique exhibition games?

It seems kind of obvious that if Seattle can’t get (or keep) a pro sports team, it’s gonna be kind of tough for us to land one. Maybe the city knows something we don’t. I haven’t done any research, but does anyone know of any smallish cities near large ones that have a pro team, while their larger sibling doesn’t? I’ve always really liked Rainiers games, and went to several hockey and soccer games when they were in town. I also like the idea of trying to score some exhibition games.

At least someone (consultants) are rooted in reality. This whole thing is so insane and such a waste of money. Why the City needed to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to tell us that the Tacoma Dome is not likely to get a major pro sports team is beyond me. Not only could a college class have told the city this, any person with an ounce of logic could. The TDome is great, it should continue to bring hundreds of thousands of people into Downtown Tacoma a year with the events it already has. Expos, wrestling, cheerleading, state basketball etc. Not only do these events bring in people, many of them bring them in for days at a time, filling hotels and restaurants. Let’s make sure the TDome continues to get these events in the future and stop wasting money on frivolous dreams unbased in reality.

And people wonder why the city is in debt. This is a gross waste of money… $100,000 could have gone somewhere else like… I dont know, saving a JOB. And they want to ask voters to give them more of our tax dollars in november for a major roads measure. – I do not think so!
