Daily Dim Sum - Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Today, it’s all about the kids.

Children’s Forum

A public forum next Tuesday, November 15th will feature the voices of a group that doesn’t often get a say in politics; “Impacts of the Great Recession: What about the children?”  Washington State Representative Jeannie Darneille and Senator Debbie Regala will host a forum for “children and those who care about children” to give voice to what the recession has meant for their lives.  The event is not only an opportunity for children to be heard, it is an opportunity for them to experience participation in the political process.  We hope turn out is good, and maybe one of these days we’ll hear from them at a City Council meeting…

Where:  Jason Lee Middle School

Find an Hour Project

Next week the Children’s Forum will give kids an opportunity to get involved in the adult world.  This week King’s Books will host an event for adults who are ready to do more than just talk about kids in our community.  This Thursday, November 10th, King’s will host an information session for Tacoma’s Find an Hour Project.  The Project is a city-wide campaign aimed at getting adults in Tacoma involved in the lives of kids in Tacoma through volunteering and mentoring, as the name implies, for an hour a week.  The program has a lot of supporters in our local schools and government, but to make it a success, more community members will need to get involved.

When:  Thursday, November 10th, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Where:  King’s Books
