Old Town Dock Work Could Begin This Summer
It looks like Old Town Dock will once again be getting the go-ahead for renovations and repairs. Construction on the $2 million project is set to kick off this August. According to an article this week in the Tacoma Daily Index, Metro Parks has construction permits in place for the dock, design plans are 90% complete, and plans are underway to raise funds for restrooms near the head of the dock.
The nearly 140-year old dock was closed back in 2008, due to concerns over deterioration and safety. The repairs looked ready to go, including funding split between the City and Metro Parks in 2011, but concerns raised by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) brought the project to a temporary halt. As “we wrote last December” the NMFS decided that the project needed to undergo a “formal consultation” before it could be deemed safe to proceed. We don’t have the full details on that process, but it appears not to have thrown too many red flags…
So, you won’t get to enjoy the new Old Town Dock this summer, but we’ve got our fingers crossed for summer 2013…

$2 million, but they still need to raise money for restrooms. Yeah, that sounds like a Metro Parks project, all right.

As long as people can get to the end of the pier, the bathrooms are unnecessary.
