On The Market: City Police Stable

Since we’ve started the morning with Old City Hall, here’s another real estate post from the neighborhood. An eagle eyed reader noticed that the circa 1907 City Policy Stable & Storehouse at 601-615 Commerce Street is on the market. It sits just below the Elks Building and next to Old City Hall. It has views of the water and extraordinarily good access to the freeway. And, best of all, while those other projects are fixers, this one is useable now. 11,844 square feet for $1.5 million. Potential? Anyone? We like it.

So, what’s the inside like? Offices? Empty loft areas? Condo type areas?

Hasn’t this property been on and off the market for a few years now?

This is an interesting photo. I’ve passed this building by car countless times and rarely notice it. By bicycle and by walking too.

Thanks to Sarah @3 for the PDF photos. I’m really familiar with the Commerce ST side of the building, but until I viewed that PDF I never made the connection that I was looking at the same building from two different sides.

It is a pretty cool building. It has that one level that exits onto the stairs going down to Pacific. Great views from the back of the building and the interior remodel is functional but nothing special. How often do you see a building this old with 8 interior parking spaces? Pretty pricey, though, I wish them luck with the asking price. Maybe the McMenamins people would be interested in this property if they could get it for a good price.

Agreed with Mofo. I’ve never made that connection either! I need to hang out downtown on foot more often…

Are there any tenants in the building now?

  • fuzzybear May 3, 2009

This building has been owned and housed by a local company called Tech-Fast for the past 5 years or so. To my knowledge, they are still currently operating out of the space. I am guessing the economy and down turn in construction business is driving the sale of the building. The building itself is fairly spacious and in great shape for its age.

This building was bought for about half the asking price 5 years ago. Not sure what has been done to the inside other than tenant improvements. It took them years to repair the front door that I believe was damage by a car crash or burglary. Looks like some people are still hoping to take advantage of the real estate bubble. One can dream, I guess.

    Anyone know much about Tech-Fast?

  • crenshaw sepulveda May 3, 2009

Tech Fast builds self storage facilities.

Once again a great building to bring a McMenamins, too. What great commerce for Tacoma that would bring.

McMenamins is not coming to Tacoma in any of our lifetimes.

I was in Portland a few days ago and visited the Mall 205 McMenamins. I asked what the plans were for Tacoma in the future and the gal said that corporate has no immediate plans for ANYTHING because of the ecomomy. In fact, she said there are two projects in the works but are on hold. It sounded like once the economy picks up, then Tacoma can get in line…

    WTF is McMenamins?

  • altered Chords May 12, 2009

McMenamins is a brew pub that favors cool buildings for their locations.

  • J. Cote May 13, 2009

I can see it now: A “Brew Pub” downstairs with high-end condos upstairs as noted by TOT @ #8 (that will never sell).I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
