Optimism in Tacoma - Take 2

Three years ago we asked a question about optimism. As we all know, the overall situation was a bit different at the beginning of 2007. Construction cranes were still spinning. Highly speculative rumors were still flying about. Our homes were all worth … nevermind. So maybe we have to dig a little deeper this year. There are still good things happening in this community. These things may not be as visible as a construction site, but they’re happening nonetheless. So, for 2010, let’s ask it again as we wake up from our holiday stupor:

What are you optimistic about? Why?

    What are you optimistic about?

New Satellite Coffee location opening downtown.

    Why?

Increased retention rate of Hipsters in Tacoma.

I’m optimistic people like Chris and Erik (and many many others) will keep fighting to make Tacoma a better, more livable community.

I just read through the post from three years ago. It’s a bit depressing to note that most of the things that gave people optimism in 2007 never happened.

Now I’ll go back to my normally optimistic self.

I’m optimistic to start seeing results from the complete streets planning. More trees, bike lanes, safe pedestrian crossings and paths installed, the sooner the better.

I’m optimistic about Tacoma accepting it’s a city and all the responsibilities associated with that acceptance (such as addressing trees, moving away from car focused design, etc). We can do it!

I’m optimistic that people will not use words like “fighting for” when they really mean “working on” changes, and that there will be a whole lot less criticism, a reduction in active antagonism and complaining while there’s an increase in support offered and useful advice shared. I’m optimistic that Tacoma has far more untapped potential than any other city on the west coast, and far more people motivated to make a difference than most cities its size. I’m optimistic that people will invest both money, votes and energy into keeping this city moving forward, cultivating arts, innovation, business, transportation and education.

I am optomistic about all the things Chris K. just said. Good stuff!

    Additional reasons:

A bit of additional life in some of the neighborhood mixed use centers

    1) Safeway expansion/remodel in Proctor

    2) Thriftway expansion in Stadium

    3) New apartment building and grocery (hopefully) on 25th and Yakima.

This optimism question is right out of the macroeconomics playbook.

American and Tacoman consumers will start feeling optimistic about spending money sometime around June 2010, with a forecast margin of error to extend no later than July 2019. (That’s what is known in the trade as a self fulfilling prophecy.) Consumer confidence will spike because of Tacoma advocacy for bike lanes and Tacoma’s new progressive social program “Zer0 Tolerance for Criticism.”

Therefore Tacoman’s, young and old, get ready for the Summer of Optimism!

Sigh… The fact that the expansion / remodel of the local safeway has made someone’s list as the basis for optimism doesn’t seem very, umm, optimistic. Way to keep your chin up, though!

I’m optimistic about all things Tacoma!

10 years ago I tried to venture out on the town for some New Year’s Eve happenings at any of our local bars and I got nothing! All of the bars were closing by 10pm to go home to their families (booooooo) and Tacoma was a ghost town at midnight.

Now look at us! Look at all of the options we had for good restaurants, cool bars, and big events to ring in 2010. Awesome! I can’t wait to see all of the new changes in this new year.

Pretty amazing that Tacoma shuts down for New Year’s Eve 1999. What ever happened to party like its 1999?

  • Altered Chords January 18, 2010

I am optimistic that everyone will recognize what a world power Altered Chords Productions is. We are launching 30 new products in 24 world markets and revenues are expected to exceed Amazon.com’s in 2010. In addition, we are working with Bill Gates to end world hunger, disease and apathy.

Three cheers for Altered Chords Productions. We’re great.
