OTM: Good Bones And A View?

We heard from a few folks that a $1.2 million condo wasn’t actually the “On the Market” you wanted this week. After all, there have been a lot of homes hitting the MLS lately that are under $200k. Some are a bit scary. But some are quite interesting… at least from the comfort of our office. For example, this historic 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1450 square foot home on South 34th street appeared at a mere $165k.
You know, it’s a decent looking place and there are views out toward the city. Downtown Tacoma is right down the hill. Hmmm…..

I can almost smell the scent of cornbread wafting from the wood fired range. And look, here comes lil Sally with her Raggedy Ann doll. “Sally, where’s kitty?”
Say, I think I hear Grandad chopping wood in the back yard…

“Grandad, where’s Granny?”
“Last I seen her, she was walking down the hill to town.”

I live just a couple blocks from this house, it has been empty for quite a while now…. It is in a very promising/upcoming neighborhood – with lots of good neighbors. We have a organized Safe Streets group with monthly meetings and a citizens patrol group that is just getting started. Someone PLEASE buy it, fix it up and move in – we need more good neighbors!!

It says it’s in “pre-foreclosure,” whatever that means.
TacomaNative, about how long has the place been empty now?

Grandad! Sally! Look! Here comes Granny walking up the hill from town. That’s her on the Pacific Avenue bridge over the freeway. She’s carrying kitty!

Hey, that looks pretty darn nice. Unlike most homes described as having “fabulous potential!” this one actually seems like it might. (Aside: eomeone buy the National Association of Realtors a thesaurus…actually, a dictionary might be more helpful.) Back to the house in question: it looks like it’s just a hop, skip and a bridge from the Top of Tacoma and sweet, sweet booze. Nice.
Wow. I hadn’t posted anything here for a while and am really happy that I got to say something positive. About real estate, even. Golly. Right now I feel like a great big Care Bear, shooting a rainbow-propelled bunch of flowers from my plush belly out across the blue(ish) sky. The flowers hang up on a low-hanging cloud, spelling out a message: “L-O-V-E”.
Happy today, Tacoma!

I just threw up a little in my mouth. ;)

We just moved into the neighborhood last July and, I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure it has been empty the entire time.
It is a very short hop skip to downtown, the T-Dome park-n-ride, Top of Tacoma, the new Neighborhood Espresso and Coffee House as well as the entire Lincoln District.

Out of the 65 families being displaced by the closure of Country Aire there are many, too many, who need a new house altogether and while this looks cute it still points to the lack of affordable housing for lower income families.

That is pretty affordable. Looks like they already got an offer.

Later that day when Granny and kitty reached home…
“Grandad, when me and kitty was walkin’ up the hill from town and on the bridge over the freeway, I seen you in the yard talkin’ again to that French lady with the funny hat and tassle, and backpack…”

I note without making any judgments about this particular house that “affordable” and “well-priced” don’t mean the same thing. In a neighborhood full of $1M+ houses, for example, a $600,000 house might be considered a “buy”, but that does not mean that a typical household in the city can afford to live there.

Grandad looked right past Granny and then after surveying the boundaries of that South 34th ST yard and historic 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1450 square foot home, he turned back toward Granny.
“Come to find out, someone wants to buy this property.”
