OTM: Next Door to Famous

Sure, you could’ve bought Ma Chihuly’s home. But, who wants to live in a semi-famous Tacoma home? The tourist traffic, gawkers… oh nevermind. Maybe it’s easier to live next to a notable home. You can look at the window and say something like “Bing Crosby lived there.”

So, if you ever wanted to own a piece of history, now’s your chance.

The home next door to the house in which Bing Crosby spent the first few years of his life has come on the market. It’s in the 1100 block of North J Street. Circa 1902. 3 bedrooms. 2 bath. 2400 square feet. Water views over St. Pats.

We’ve always liked this little stretch of homes and it is part of the North Slope Historic District. Sure, $425k doesn’t exactly put it in all of our price ranges… but it’s next door to the house with the plaque on the front walk.

“The home next door to the house in which Bing Crosby spent the first few years of his life…”

Its a little more than than that isn’t it? I could be wrong, but I do believe that Bing was born in that house. I know for sure that he was baptized in the Catholic Church across the street.

Yes, he was born in the house next door, was babtized at St. Pat’s and his father’s name is on a framed Knights of Columbus charter document on the wall in the church basement.

Interesting note: the plaque on Bing’s steps has the wrong date – he was born on May 3, 1903. We set off fireworks on the sidewalk for his 100th birthday (same night as the new TAM all-night opening party). The residents of the house weren’t too happy with me. Luckily they are friends now.
