Our Favorite Thing This Week

Our favorite thing this week came from past reader comments. In reading back through our previous coverage of the Foremost Dairy Building, we came across several comment threads that were a real treat to read, particularly those attached to Dan Rahe’s 2010 article, It’s Not Just Good, It’s Foremost. The article and comments reminded us of some interesting details of the development of the Foremost Building. For example, a commenter filled us in that the floors were originally sloped to allow for collection of excess milk, and so had to be filled level as a part of the renovations.

Our favorite comment from that article gave a sense of the Foremost Dairy that goes beyond the mere building:

When I was a kid a gallon of Foremost milk cost $1.03. It was packaged in waxed paper cartons which had orange printed graphics.

When you’ve got ten year-old hands and you pull one of those heavy square cartons from the fridge and then lose your grip…It’s nearly impossible to quickly sidestep a gaining puddle of milk and keep your socks dry and pick up the carton before it completely empties. –Mofo from the Hood

We love reading personal memories of Tacoma’s history. Thanks for sharing.

As a close runner-up for favorite thing this week, we also enjoyed Jesse’s response to a commenter who apparently lost his way, and unintentionally left a comment meant for someone else. Our anonymous commenter has tired of being reminded of impending neighborhood clean-ups, and decided to make his feelings known in comments on our Tacoma Neighborhood Makeover Week.

can you please stop leaving your flyers in my door. you have sent us five already and we have thrown them all away. its just tacoma we dont care.

As excessive as five flyers may be for one clean-up event, we have a hard time with the final sentence, such as it is. We stand with Jesse.

(the menace of apathy > the menace of flyers)

    That commenter deserved a smack-down.
