Park(ing) Day 2012: Coming to a Parking Spot Near You

Park(ing) Day 2012 is coming to Tacoma on Friday, September 21.

Park(ing) Day is an international day of turning passive urban parking stalls into active mini-parks filled with people, plants, music, art, and games. Originally invented in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, PARK Day calls attention to the need for more urban open space and challenges people to rethink the way streets are used… at least until the meter runs out.

There are a number of ways you can participate in Tacoma’s Park(ing) Day. You can tour the spots on your own, or in a walk led by Downtown On The Go. Take pictures of yourself at each spot you visit, and be entered to win a Park(ing) Day t-shirt and a $12 ORCA Card.

Or, if you’re feeling inspired, you may still be able to get in on the action and create your very own parking spot oasis (see the Tacoma Weekly for more on that).

I doubt if many Tacomanians want to trade their parking space for a “mini-park.” If there was a mini-park you wouldn’t have any place to park your car and you’d be spending your free time every day picking up malt liquor bottles and dog poop.

It’s always a fun event, whether you participate or just walk down the street and enjoy a park. We’re excited to see the creativity out there! Hoping this helps people rethink how they get to, and around, downtown.
