Parking Day is September 21st
Have you ever wanted a little park of your own in the middle of the city? We have a few pocket parks and quite a few empty lots, but maybe a little mini-park is what you need to improve your day.
Friday, September 21st, join the Trust for Public Land and people in cities all over the world to create your own pocket park – one hour at a time. Based on work done by Rebar (follow the link for photos) in San Francisco a few years ago, people will create parks in metered or limited time parking areas.
So roll out the sod, bring a few potted plants from home and a bench, and—voila!—that one hour parking spot becomes a cozy park. (Note: if we plan it right, we can string together enough parks to play bocce. And would that count as chain parking?)
Tacoma isn’t on the official list of participating cities… so join the fun and get outside this Friday!

City Manager Eric Anderson has said the public sculpture will help tie together the convention center, museums and theater district.
“I believe it will be an important icon for the City of Tacoma,” he said.
I really couldn’t have said it better myself. Now $800 a month 400 square foot studio apartments will be leasing faster than they can build them. There will not a person between Portland and Seattle, with the disposable income, that wouldn’t want to be part of this dream. This is what downtown was missing all along, and what a critical piece it was.

That’s why it’s a giant fish hook; to catch all the big fish. (At least it’s not barbed, so maybe they’re keeping the option to throw some back.)

Looks like they’re stopping work after a snag.
Ouch. Major snag with the artist here too. And such bad weather. Painful.
This is what downtown was missing all along, and what a critical piece it was.
I think the piece will “work.” We will see. At least Tacoma is taking a shot at something instead of stagnating and it can’t really hurt anything (unless it falls).

i realize this comment is neither insightful nor constructive; however, i think the sculpture is kind of silly looking: sort of like a nose cone of an airplane.

Art is many things to many people, right Tad? For me, it looks like a glass half full…
