Parking Pay Stations Public Meeting - Thursday, August 5

If you’d like to hear about Tacoma’s impending parking system improvements and share your comments and ideas, Thursday, August 5 (tomorrow), will be one of two final opportunities to do so. Monthly meetings have been held since April of this year, led by an advisory group of 12 Tacoma citizens and business leaders. After tomorrow, one final meeting will be held before the pay stations are ready for business on September 20, 2010.

For more information on the parking pay stations, visit the Downtown Parking website here. For maps, background information and other details, visit the City of Tacoma page related to parking here.

Since 1976, drivers have primarily only been required to correctly turn their wheels to the curb when parking on our gentle slopes. When the pay stations become operational, they must also remember to pay the initial rate of $0.75 per hour (one of the lowest hourly rates in the Sound area).

Will these pay stations address parking-related problems in Tacoma? Will downtown businesses benefit from the projected shortened parking cycles? Will paid parking make it easier to visit favorite downtown attractions? Tell us what you think, but also be sure to participate in these two final meetings.

pay stations good. max 2hr time limit on pay station bad.

When this comes up for review again, I’d like to see both the time limit and $/hr doubled. 75 cents/hr is silly. It’s likely not enough to pay for the meters or to change behavior.
