Callaghan sometimes writes some snarky articles which are a bit off.
However, occasionally he nails it and this was one of those times.
If every development decision in Tacoma is seen as political and there are no rules that apply, it sets a very bad precedent.
By allowing each and every collateral issue into these decisions, the council is sending a message that there are no rules or guidelines for decisions other than what groups can exert has the most last minute political pressure.
Such an approach to governance gives not predictability to working with the city and makes it a foolish environment to consider investing it.
It also undermines any effort to implement long term planning.
Fortunately, the council saw the light this time and enough of them held the line and the Foss Hotel was allowed to proceed based on the actual substantive issue before the council.

Disappointing.
It should not be the councils responsibility to ensure good design and responsible building practices but it should be someone’s.
