Pierce County Homeless Count 2012

After the last week of wintery weather, many of us in the Northwest are really appreciating having a roof over our heads. Maybe you’ve even thought more than once about those who aren’t so fortunate. In this cold and nasty weather local shelters have been stretched to capacity.

Every year Pierce County conducts a survey of people experiencing homelessness, which helps the County and other agencies determine the level of need in the area. The more accurate the count, the better the planning and provision of services to those in need. The survey is depends on the help of volunteers, who administer surveys and hand out thank you gifts to participants at various shelters around the county.

This year’s homeless count is scheduled for Thursday, January 26th through Friday, January 27th. If you can make time to help out as a volunteer, there’s still time to attend the required volunteer training session next Tuesday, January 24th (4:30 to 6:00 p.m., at the Community Connections Sound View Location, 3602 Pacific Ave., Conference Room A). You can also help by donating personal items.

To volunteer or learn more about the 2012 survey, contact Rae Anne Giron at Pierce County Community Connections at (253) 798-6931.

Once the weather has cleared, and the state of emergency has been lifted, you’ll get back to your life, and need to catch up on everything you’ve missed, but maybe you’ll be able to make room in your busy schedule to help out with the homeless count.
