Plans for Your Memorial Day Weekend

Okay, we’ll confess: our brains have already switched to weekend mode. We’re checked out of the work week, and into our long weekend…

If you’re staying in town for the holiday weekend, there’s always plenty to do, it’s just a matter of knowing where to look, and deciding what you’r looking for. We can think of a few things we’d like to check out this weekend, but what are your plans?

Point Defiance Visitors Center and Shuttle – You could head down to Point Defiance and check out the new visitors center and complementary shuttle service. The center opens today, and the weather forecast is looking good for tomorrow’s grand opening. While you’re down there, you could check out the Crafts of the Past at Fort Nisqually. Or, if you’ve got a to-do list that involves getting some plants in the ground before Tuesday, you could kill two birds with one stone and stop by the Spring Plant Sale at the Point Defiance Greenhouses.

Copper River Salmon – Always a favorite, the first batch hit Washington docks about a week ago. Whether you go for the Copper River, or something with a little less hype, it’s hard to go wrong with salmon on Memorial Day weekend. On the barbecue. With a little salt, pepper, and lemon. A generous helping of grilled asparagus. And a gin and bitter lemon. Back deck if there’s sun. Dining room table if there’s not. Mmmm…

Proctor Farmers’ Market – Whatever your plans are, you’ll need sustenance, and the market should be going strong tomorrow morning. Their Facebook page also promises the return of Stina’s Cellars to the wine and beer tasting booth – just one more good reason to stop by.

Bike Commuting Workshop – If Monday isn’t too far off, you might want to stop by Tacoma Bike in Proctor at 6:00 p.m. for their workshop on the basics of bike commuting. As we approach the end of Bike Month, we also approach the beginning of summer, and there are going to be so many more good bike commuting days ahead…

Okay, those are some of the things we’re thinking about for the weekend (along with a bag or two of Tacoma Boys chips and salsa…); anyone else have suggestions?
