Please Eat at PSP

Here’s a little shout out for a local business and Exit133 supporter.

Puget Sound Pizza has been living in the absolute dead center of the Broadway LID construction. Their sidewalk and street has been torn up and the path to their front door changes daily. According to Jim at PSP, these conditions have been devastating on business. They were proactive in offering breakfast 7 days a week and tightening shifts. Nevertheless, the customers have been scared away by the back hoes.

While the construction is looking better and better each day, it’s still not done. So …

Send your love. Eat breakfast. Drink drinks. Eat pizza. Get outside your office and support PSP. (Hint: Go down Broadway and turn up the hill.)

p.s. this came from our very own Sassy McButterpants:

Come on people, is it really that hard to park on Broadway, get off your fat arses and walk 30 feet up the hill? There’s drunken karaoke with Colin and pizza to reward you once you get there!

Let’s get them through this construction phase so everything can be back to normal with good food, drink and friends once again.

Can you help?

Fore the record: my intention was not to imply that the readership is fat…. or even that there’s anything wrong with having a little junk in the trunk. Really, I was just trying to say to back your trunk up the hill where you will be rewarded with pizza. That’s all. Really.

So what night exactly will you, Sassy, be there singing karaoke and what exactlty will you be singing? Not that the readership feels compelled to learn your identity.

I didn’t know I was being civic-minded last week when I didn’t feel like cooking dinner. They seemed to be getting their usual share of traffic that evening.

Take it from Sassy and walk up from Broadway instead of down from Fawcett if you can. It’s much more fun to be rewarded with pizza than by walking up afterward with a full belly! I’m glad that I accomplished this feat anyway especially in our coldest of cold seasons!

Either way, you win, because you get to eat delicious PSP!

I heard from an owner of The Mix that they broke their sales record this weekend… PSP seemed pretty busy at breakfast Saturday morning. Either way support the businesses in the St. Helens/Theater District!

It doesn’t help that the pizzas are like $16.95+

Times are tough, and like the vast majority of Americans, T’OT is feeling the pinch. Eating out is now a luxury.

If they had even just one “bargain Pizza” for like $11 or something, that may go a long way to getting more bodies in there.

I’m inclined to go along what TO’T says, even with the construction it is not all that hard to get into PSP. I’m thinking the pricing is keeping people away more than the hoes. How about a pizza and a couple of beers without spending more than 20 bucks (including tax)? I like PSP as much as the next guy but with the economy the way it is people will set their priorities according to their wallets. Besides, after the construction is over they’ll be rolling in the dough, as it were.

  • Jim @ PSP December 17, 2008

We can totally do a $20 pizza special with a two draft beers (or soda) and we can start it today.

We’ll offer a large cheese pizza with 2 toppings of your choice and two beers or sodas for $20 including tax and we can offer that special 7 days a week from 2pm until 6pm. As always, we offer a 3-topping 8 inch pizza for under 10 bucks.

PSP has been offering a daily $4.99 breakfast special that includes free Valhalla coffee and that hasn’t been the draw we were looking for, and that’s a steal…

Or, how about something like a blow-out deal on mondays where we’ll offer any of our large Specialty Pizzas for $12? We could do that.

Am pretty open to most reasonable ideas. But what I really want for Christmas is the Broadway LID to get finished, because it does look great and the peeps at the City have been as supportive as possible and I thank them. I just want it done. I have a new respect for what the guys at Alfreds went through with the D Street overpass thing.

Pricing is a tricky thing; We, as all restaurants do, base our prices off of the commodities we purchase from our purveyors that make the store go vroom.

And anyone who has looked at any commodities markets over the past 16 months knows prices have been all over the board.

So … when mozzarella cheese rocketed up to $62 a case from $44 we never raised prices. In fact, we never even changed or cut-back the amounts that we used, because I hate when places do that, too.

Im away at school right now, but i get back for holiday vacation on Saturday. I’ve only actually been to PSP once, but I love the atmosphere and the food is great, so I’ll try to make it over at least once with some friends. The first time I went I walked in and they were playing Radiohead and I knew it was a great place.

I know longer live in Tacoma but I love the PSP logo.
Do you sell t-shirts? I’ve looked on your sight and nothing.
If you cant eat them, wear them.

  • Jesse December 17, 2008

If these guys can stay open until the LID is done then they’ll see more business than ever. People will want to hang in that neighborhood.

  • Jesse December 17, 2008

When is the next DT LID starting???

  • Marguerite December 17, 2008

I didn’t know PSP had breakfast for $4.99 including coffee! Breakfast is my favorite meal.

    I’m so there.

  • Jim C December 17, 2008

I’m trying to do my part – I’ve been in for a pesto pizza to go about once a week for the past two months. I highly recommend that anyone and everyone try PSP’s pesto pizza, at least once: it is the singularly best pizza I’ve ever had on the West Coast.

  • Squid December 17, 2008

Just want to say that this food bully thinks that PSP is easily the best “non-gourmet” pizza in Tacoma. Not really fair to compare creations like the Primo pies, which are a different breed. When you want a sausage, artichoke and mushroom pie with the a zesty tomato sauce and a well-made crust, PSP is your place. Doing much cheaper than they do requires pre-made and inferior toppings.

Squid is cutting back himself these days, but he is sticking to his guns on what constitutes “value” when it comes to food. The Pacific Grill BLT at $13 (with those awesome shoe-string fries) is still value eating, at its best.

Kudos James. Keep on keepin’ on.

Breakfast AND coffee for $4.99, some people pay that much for just coffee in some places.

  • jacinda December 17, 2008

Jim@PSP: I think us residents of the Webster, who are also having to deal with this horribly loud construction, rattling windows and limited parking, should get some sort of pizza deal. Just an idea. I’m fairly certain many of us visit and love you guys anyway, but affordable pizza and beer are hard to turn down. Regardless, I too will be extremely happy when the LID is done. I know it will be worth all the hassle when the day finally comes, but it’s beginning to feel like it will never get here.

  • LB December 17, 2008

Jim @ PSP – Thanks for posting those fantastic deals. I eat at PSP about once a week and have been known to go back in the morning for breakfast. By the way, PSP has one of the best breakfasts in town, in my humble opinion.

  • Thorax O'Tool December 18, 2008

I like PSP and I do eat there whenever I have the spare $$$ to do so.
Thus, here are my ideas for helping:

How about a refer-a-friend deal? For every friend you refer to PSP, you get like $4 off your pizza or a free drink or something.

PSP merchandise. My buddy who lives in Seattle proudly wears the Satellite Coffee shirt I bought him.
I don’t like coffee, but I do like Pizza. Sell a nice PSP hoodie or T shirt and I’d wear it.

    Gurella advertising.
“What?” you ask. Simple… slightly more unorthodox (and cheaper) ad tricks. My personal favorite: The wheatpasted poster ads of Toulouse-Lautrec. Imagine very artfully done PSP posters around town.
…just one of the many possible examples of what can be done.

Crowdsourcing. Have a cool contest for the patrons of PSP to design an ad or what not. You could have like a free drink (with a pizza purchase) for all entrants, a free medium pizza to the top 5 entries, and the grand prize could be getting a new pizza named for you.
Hell, I’d be thrilled to be able to walk up to the counter and order a large O’Tool.

New customers expand the business; the loyal returning customers keep it alive.
I’m quite certain if enough of us put our collective energies together, amazing stuff could happen.

  • Jake December 19, 2008

Here is another idea.. Use your PSP myspace page more. It is your only website (like your neighbors upstairs) so why not post your deals on there? You have over 600 friends. Send out a bulletin with a coupon or just advertise your daily specials, events, etc.

    And it is free!

  • Cromletch McHammer December 19, 2008

    Myspace?
    Gross.

I do like the refer-a-friend deal tho.

  • Marguerite December 19, 2008

So I had a chance to check out the $4.99 breakfast this morning and all I can say is, “Wow!”

A big pancake, bacon, egg, and hashbrowns plus coffee (which turned out to be 4 cups for me).

    I will be back!

  • Steven December 23, 2008

Not so much on the egg sandwhich though.
