Here’s a little something that came to our attention:

Puget Sound Regional Council Recommends Transportation Funding for Tacoma

SEATTLE – The Puget Sound Regional Council is recommending more than $23 million in funding for projects serving Tacoma, part of more than $440 million in federal funds proposed by PSRC to improve transportation around the region.

Projects include:

  • Historic Water Ditch Trail – $100,000

  •
  • Milwaukee Way Overlay – $750,000

  •
  • Pacific Avenue Streetscape – $800,000

  •
  • Puyallup River Bridge F16A & F16B Replacement – $12,200,000

  •
  • Tacoma’s Top-4 Bikeways Project – $500,000

  •
  • Thea Foss Waterway – Site 10 Esplanade – $50,000

  •
  • Tacoma Dome Station G Street Bus Zone Expansion – $627,471

  •
  • Sounder South Expanded Service – $3,115,150

  •
  • Sounder Vehicle Preservation & Maintenance – $4,193,672

“These projects were selected on their merits and support the region’s economic development and growth,” said Bellevue Councilmember Claudia Balducci, chair of PSRC’s Transportation Policy Board. “When Congress approved these funds earlier this year, their focus was on growing and sustaining jobs. These projects, large and small, will put people to work and shore up the foundations of our economy for the future.”

PSRC is encouraging public comments on the projects proposed for funding and on the region’s draft Transportation Improvement Program for 2013-2016. The public comment period runs from September 13 through October 25, 2012. The vote by PSRC’s Executive Board to approve the 2013-2016 Transportation Improvement Program is scheduled for October 25. A complete list of all projects and more information is available at psrc.org.

How about 38Th st. streetscape, or Thompson Ave. resurfacing. This part of town could use some needed infrastructure repairs.

The area around the new South Tacoma Sounder Station. Take $400,000 from the Pacific Streetscape project to not only upgrade parking, sidewalks (not ADA accessible), but also to expand the facility to become the new Amtrak Station. The station must move from its current location and Freighthouse Square does not have the space for the trainsets.

Take all of the Milwakee Way money and put towards the Prologis Site access road upgrades for connection to SR16..

Take another 100,000 from the Tacoma Top 4 bike project and put towards completeion of the Water Flume (Ditch) trail.

Wait a second. So out of $440 million for the Puget Sound region, we, the second largest population center, get five percent? WTF?

And we’re supposed to be happy about this?

Combined population of King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap 3,754,659. Tacoma 200,678 = 5.3%
Total allocation, 440million. Tacoma’s allocation, 23million = 5.2% I don’t know if some cities are taking in more than their fair share, but Tacoma seems pretty spot on in this particular case.
