Public Input Sought on Tacoma Public Schools Budget Priorities

Tight budgets all around mean all around closer scrutiny of priorities. Tacoma Public Schools is no exception. This coming Monday the district will host a public meeting to “poll citizens on what district programs and services they believe are most important as the district wrestles with future budget deficits in K-12 education.”

Community members who attend the meeting will have the opportunity to weigh in on a wide variety of services provided by the district. With an estimated $12 million budget shortfall predicted over the next four to five years, the district will need to make some cuts, and the meeting is designed to identify community priorities for where those cuts should (or should not) be made. The decisions are ultimately up to the district’s Board of Directors, but this is your chance to let them know what you value in the school system.

I would be willing to cut premium pay for teachers and other staff members such as overpaid administrators. I would be willing to eliminate internet services for school employees who spend all day looking at ebay and facebook. I would cut most of the cell phones and automobile allowances.

Fund the actual student programs first.

I would be glad to pay good teachers more, if we could just lay off the few bad examples who have given up on actually teaching. There are a lot of wonderful and passionate teachers out there, along with a few bad apples, and many more who just don’t get the support they need. I’m hoping we can see some real and productive accountability brought to teacher evaluations – teachers should get more credit for teaching well than for tenure.
