Puget Sound Revels - May Day in Tollefson Plaza
May Day is just around the corner and I’m sure you’re still trying to sort out your plans. Well, should you feel like dancing and singing, we have an opportunity for you!
Join the Puget Sound Revels in Tollefson Plaza. From 6:30 to 8:30 there will be singing and dancing in the May with circle dances, May pole, poetry and drama. Art stations will be set up to allow for flowery crowns, May baskets and garland making.
The Revels are always a good time. Come on out and help fill our fine public square with voices!

How big of a Maypole? The one in Leavenworth is 50’ tall.
We can sooooo beat that.

May 1st is International Workers’ Day. No silly pole will ever change that. This year, watching the economy implode due to upper class greed, we need to remember the value of workers and hard work more than ever.
T Thorax Z. O'Tool April 27, 2009
You can’t celebrate that here… it’s a (gasp!) communist holiday or something!
But for serious for a sec. That would be hella (yes, I did say hella ) interesting thing to try. All us working-class stiffs get out to Tollefson on 5-1 and celebrate all the hard work we actually do.
Stockbrokers, management, CEOs, boards of directors, bankers and politicians not invited, as you all don’t actually work.
M MattonGrant April 27, 2009
As long as you sing and dance, (or enjoy watching others doing so) please come. This isn’t communism, this is flowers in your hair paganism. It should be a fun, noisy, family-friendly good time.
T Thorax O'Tool April 27, 2009
I was being funny about communism. Most rational people know International Workers’ Day isn’t a communist holiday.
But sadly, I do know a few less-than-rational people who think it is.
Cossacks or not, if I have the 1st off I’ll be there.

Yes, I got your jest.
My point is that this May Day celebration predates all that politcal/social economic stuff. Which ruined May Day, IMHO
It’s about Spring, fertility, flowers, song.
Let’s hope that Mother Nature will give us a beautiful day like we had yesterday.

“It’s about Spring, fertility, flowers, song.“
I thought that is what the Vernal Equinox was all about.

The great thing about Revels is it allow you to become part of the festivity rather than passively sitting back and watching (or caustically blogging about it). Besides, the brown ale tastes that much better after a dance or two around the May pole.

Check it out at Tollefson Plaza where live music is best.
A N D watch real live pole dancers get their freak on!

I sure hope fredo doesn’t find out about this. May Day celebration, public property, tax payer money. This could be bad, very, very, bad.
M MattonGrant April 28, 2009
I don’t know of any taxpayer money going into this. P.S.Revels is paying for the use of TP.

Ditto Patricia… besides, think of all the historic labor groups that had song as integral to their culture (Welsh miners, Sailors) to make bleak times better and express their solidarity/community. And hey – long strings, a pole, and flowers in my hair coupled with the opportunity to sing loudly (in a place where it would otherwise be ILLEGAL) while drowned out by traffic and the Link, what’s not to love??? I’ll be there in something delightfully pink!
D David Boe April 29, 2009
and I just heard that ‘The Hoff’ might make a surprise appearance…just imagine.

Revels is paying for the use of TP.
I hope that’s toilet paper and not Tollefson Plaza. Of course maybe you mean they are BEING paid to bring people downtown on a Friday evening and “activate the space.” Sadly, I don’t think that’s the case.

Tra la! It’s May!
The lusty month of May!
That darling month when ev’ryone throws
Self-control away.
It’s time to do
A wretched thing or two,
And try to make each precious day
One you’ll always rue!
It’s May! It’s May!
The month of “yes you may,”
The time for ev’ry frivolous whim,
Proper or “im.”
It’s wild! It’s gay!
A blot in ev’ry way.
The birds and bees with all of their vast
Amorous past
Gaze at the human race aghast,
The lusty month of May.

So to revive something from several yester-comments ago… Does one seriously have to shell out money to throw a big public performance event at Tollefson?
M Mofo from the Hood May 1, 2009
Hooray! Hooray! The 1st of May
Outside scr*wing starts today!
M MattonGrant May 4, 2009
Well, that was a lot of fun! The weather was beautiful. The May Pole looked great when finished, especially considering with the amount of people per ribbon. And most importantly, I think everyone had a good time bringing song and dance into the community.
See ya at next event!

Next event would be?
