Reader Question: Tacoma CARES?

Every once in a while we get a question from a reader that can be better answered by crowd-sourcing than by the typical Exit133 email response method (i.e. ignoring it until it goes away). We received one such question this week:

I was thinking about using the Tacoma CARES hotline to report blight. The renters next door have perpetual piles of junk in their yard, and no apparent plans to change the situation any time soon. Does the CARES hotline even work?

Our friends at the City seem to think so … Well, what do you think? Have you called Tacoma CARES? How did it work out for you? Any words of wisdom?

I have and yes, it works, but really why would you ask? It’s no effort to try and you don’t have anything to lose as the situation won’t change if you do nothing.

I have used Tacoma Cares MANY times to file complaints against properties, potholes, street lights etc. I usually use TacomaServices.org to do it. There you can just pick what the issue is and type it out.

I do think their funding has been slashed because things take longer to get fixed sometimes (except street lights) and you don’t get an email reply from a person like back in the day.
