“Diva Night” at REI? What the HELL?

News flash, REI: your insulting ploy for women’s $$$ in a rough economy is transparent. And I mean it wholeheartedly when I say “Insulting.” What – are we going to get mani-pedis and a martini after 3 hours rock climbing scrapes off our polish?

Encouraging women to shop at your business, and encouraging women to do athletic activities, are both perfectly fine commercial endeavors. But this is just too much.

I’m inclined to disagree. I think they did a poor job naming it – I don’t see many women who see themselves as ‘divas’ seeing themselves going to an event at REI. Actually, the first thing I thought when I heard the name was of diva cups…

In any case, I think it is a well-intentioned women’s night meant to be less intimidating to the easily intimidated and featuring gear made to fit women.

Besides, is it really so bad to get mani-pedis and a martini after 3 hours of rock climbing scrapes off our polish? There’s nothing wrong with being both rough and tumble and girly.

Supporting good businesses in Tacoma is never a bad thing. Many businesses have “Girl’s Night Out” and “Ladies Night” and they’ve had those promotions for years. I just wish they had the “creepy 15 year old boys that come into the bra shop with the 12 year old girlfriend they intend to get pregnant but still stare you down when you’re shopping for unmentionables will be banned in our store on this one day” event. That is one worthy event I would go to. Can I get a “Diva Night Only” at the undie shop sometime soon. That would be great!

Rock climbing followed by mani-pedis and a martini? That sounds like an awesome day! Can we organize an event like this?
