Ribbon Cutting Celebration for 13 Miles of Bikeways

Tomorrow Tacoma celebrates a significant milestone for non-motorized transportation.

The City is celebrating the completion of a plan that has been at least four years in the making - since the bikeway improvements were added to the City's Mobility Master Plan in 2010.

You can now hop on your bicycle and ride from North 26th and Pearl all the way to South 96th and Park Avenue, and back again (or the other way around) - it's 13.1 miles of bike and pedestrian improvements.

  • 58 new pedestrian ramps
  • 2 miles of bike lanes
  • 296 sharrows
  • 5 pedestrian islands
  • 15 improved intersection crossings

It's all about connecting Tacoma neighborhoods and business districts with a safe, accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians - making bicycling, whether for fitness or transportation, safer.

The City and bicycle advocates invite you to come out and share in the celebration with a ribbon cutting ceremony and other activities starting from Wright Park tomorrow, Wednesday, September 4. Mayor Strickland and Representative Norm Dicks will preside over the ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. at the Division and Yakima entrance to the park, then there will be a number of ways for the public to participate.

  • Take a 1.5 mile walk with Mayor Strickland and Downtown on the Go
  • Go for a southern 3.5-mile bike ride along the project with City Council Members Lauren Walker and Marty Campbell to the Lincoln District
  • Go for a northeast 3-mile bike ride along the project with City Council Members David Boe and Robert Thoms though the Proctor District
  • After the event, Tacoma Green Drinks invites you to pedal or walk your way over to the Harmon Hub to continue the celebration.

This week's official celebration includes these short ride/walk options - we're looking forward to riding the full 13.1. Speaking of which, 13.1 sounds like a familiar distance, as does the full out-and back at 26.2 miles...

It's not the end of the active transportation festivities for September - Bike to Work Week kicks off on the 22nd, the second annual Sunday Parkways: Downtown to Defiance event is coming up on the 28th, and of course all month long it's Walk to Work and Win Month. Who's ready to get moving?
