Rollergirls + Armory = Happiness
Old buildings with turrets are extremely cool. Unite an old turreted building with our town’s all-female roller derby league – and we have a pretty darn sweet combination.
The Dockyard Derby Dames (DyDD) –Tacoma’s original all-female roller derby league – has found a new practice space in the Historic Tacoma Armory. The Armory is still used by the Washington State National Guard and is located at 715 South 11th Street. We’ve always loved this old Russell and Babcock designed building …
Since the DyDD lost their Parkland-based practice space in May of this year, the league has rented practice time from the Auburn Skate Connection.
Tacoma’s rollergirls have bouts once per month until the end of the season in October. The next bout will be held August 23rd at the Tacoma Soccer Center (2610 Bay St. E., Tacoma) beginning at 7pm. Doors open at 6pm, and early arrival is encouraged for front row “Crash Zone” seating. Tickets are $10 in advance at BrownPaperTickets.com or $12 at the door. Ten percent of tickets sold at the door benefit local charities.
The DyDD has begun recruiting women ages 21+ to train for their 2009 season. Tryouts will be held at the Auburn Skate Connection on Sunday, October 5th. Skates and gear are made available for tryouts.
Congratulations on your new home!
