Sand on Thea Foss?

The News Tribune reported this morning that a proposed hotel on the Thea Foss waterway wants to bring some fun to our waterfront.

The developer of the Wave Beach Club Spa & Hotel plans to line the public esplanade with sand, bring a swimming pool to the hillside and promote outdoor activities – all in an attempt to bring some fun to the quiet waterfront.

Okay. Does this sound gimicky to anybody else? Sand on the Thea Foss waterway sounds about as practical as a convertible in Tacoma. It’s useful for about two months a year. I’m sorry, but sand on the Thea Foss is not going to make it “a destination.” Let’s bring a few more good places to eat and drink. Drop a couple places like Primo Grill down there. Add a Starbucks/Tullys/independent bookstore coffee shpo. Throw in a few good old fashioned bars. Then maybe we’ll see people walking around on the Thea Foss.

In the meantime, let’s use some of that undeveloped land and boardwalks for an urban cyclocross track. Now that would get me down there.
