Scott Pierson Trail Ribbon Cutting on May 12th
Are you riding your bike? The weather is great and it’s bike to work month. So, feeling the pressure from Jamie we inflated the tires on our old Phillips and rode into town today. Which brings us to the press release that arrived in our inbox this morning. Community bike rides – good. Bike trails – Great!
Begin Press Release:
Join Tacoma’s Mayor Bill Baarsma, Tacoma Wheelmen’s Bicycle Club President Timothy Payne and a host of others at the Scott Pierson Trail ribbon cutting ceremony from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, inside Cheney Stadium. In conjunction with the ribbon cutting ceremony, the City of Tacoma and Group Health are hosting a kick-off bike ride on the Scott Pierson Trail from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The 3.8 mile bike ride will start at War Memorial Park, 1299 N. Sunset Dr., and will end at the gate located in the Cheney Stadium parking lot, 2502 S. Tyler St. The public is invited to join the bike ride anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. – kids will receive free bike accessories, safety tips and prizes along the trail.
The Scott Pierson Trail extends along the State Route 16 corridor and was built as part of a Washington State Department of Transportation project that widens SR 16 and adds high-occupancy vehicle lanes. The inaugural community event on May 12 is to honor the memory of Scott Pierson who was an avid bike rider and a 23-year employee of the City of Tacoma. He was a dedicated advocate for the construction of this trail and the principle designer of the trail’s final alignment.
