Six Tacoma Schools Up for Historic Designation

Six Tacoma schools may soon join Stadium High School, Lincoln High School and Washington Hoyt Elementary on the Tacoma Register of Historic Places.
The schools, all built between 1911 and 1952, were recommended by the Tacoma School Board to be considered for historic designation.

- Jason Lee Middle School, built in 1924
- Stewart Middle School, built in 1925
- McCarver Elementary School, built in 1925
- Whitman Elementary School, built in 1952

Very cool! Thanks for posting! The start time of the public hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 27 is 5 p.m. though. And the meeting wraps up once comments wrap up.

Hmm, the press release sent out by the city listed the hearing as 4-5 p.m. I’ll check into this.

Sadly the oldest school Barlow Annex; 3012 S. 59th St. (South Tacoma); built in 1910 by architect Frederick Heath did not make the list as well as the co-located Gray Middle School.

Congratulations to the Bobcats of Jason Lee Middle School! You may be in the bottom 5% of test performance in the state, but at least you’re learning nothing while in an historically significant building.
