Sonic Coming to Tacoma at Sixth and Orchard

As many of you that follow me on Twitter know, my parents are in town (so please be on your best behavior). Well, while we were driving down Sixth Avenue last night, my dad states flatly,

“Oh look, that’s going to be a Sonic.”

“What did you say?”

“Sonic?”

“Here?”

“That’s what the signs says …”

“Good eye, Dad.”

So it appears there will be a Sonic Drive In coming to Tacoma at Sixth and Orchard. It will be filling the Classy Casual space that I remember as Godfather’s Pizza during my years at UPS when the building still had the great drive-in awning. I must admit that I have never been to a Sonic, but I know that it’s important to many … like how Carl’s Jr. or In-N-Out Burger is important to some others out there. Are you excited?

Excited? of course! Any new business opening in Tacoma is a great sign… WE NEED JOBS and this type of business opening creates jobs!

You have to admit it is a perfect location for a Sonic. I’m no big fan but the location is tailor made for them.

    BURGERVILLE!

While a jobs and new business coming to town is good, WTF? Sonic?

Ever eaten there? Their food barely meets the legal requirements to be called “food”. But, in all fairness they are better than white castle.

while not the single best burger of all time, their cherry limeades are quite lovely. The fact that I don’t have to drive to South Hill anymore makes it totally worth it.

And where in the history of earth has fast “food” ever been qualified as real food? We eat it because it is quick and greasy.

Can Tacoma become the host for every fast food operation that ever existed? That would really bring in people from all corners. We have the museum of glass, soon a museum of cars; i say we also become a living museum of fast food. I want a Tommy’s and a FatBurger, not to mention a Pink’s hotdogs. Toss in an In-N-Out and we are on our way to being set.

Thorax, Thorax. Why the hate for White Castle? When Squid goes for fast food (an admittedly and increasingly rare occurance) he dives shamelessly and vigorously straight to the bottom of the pool.

    Long live Whities.

SCHEDULED opening date for the Tacoma is mid-late March. This may change. The Bonney Lake store was supposed to open just after Labor day…now opening Oct. 12th.

They’re likely to tear the existing structure down to make way for the Sonic. The configuration needed for the store is MUCH different than what’s there now.

The owner plans 15 stores within the next 5 years. Some will be in places outside the Tacoma/South South area.

Yes their burger are sub-par, but tater-tots and grilled cheese sandwiches on the go is a must! plus you add a little vodka to that cherry lime-aid and you got yourself a party my friends!

Omigosh! I am SO excited!! Thrilled!

  • Altered Chords September 25, 2009

I am not excited. I have never eaten at a Sonic and it has no appeal to me. I eat oatmeal and non fat milk. That is all I eat now.

What goes around, comes around! Back in the 60’s and 70’s that was the location of Busch’s Drive-In and Restaurant. I was a car-hop/curb girl there. There was a long curb where the cars could park and we’d take the trays of food out and hang it on their windows. My first day, I didn’t know how to operate the tray and I tipped it up to look underneath. I dumped the milkshake into the poor guys car! Great tips!

I’d prefer In-N-Out. On the whole Sonic really is rather ordinary…even a little sub-par.

Why the hate for White Castle?

Do not like. I lived for a while in Toledo, OH… those things are everywhere, and I ate at multiple locations multiple times. I just cannot stand their burgers. Maybe it’s me, who knows. Regardless:

Sweeeeeet!!!! We lose the Luzon but gain a Sonic! If we can just get a Walmart Superstore and a Long John Silver’s will be friggin Tulsa!!

We do need more jobs. Have you been in a fast food place lately? No more high-schoolers, everyone working there is an adult!

I grew up in Texas and my friends worked at Sonic in high school. They make a killer cherry limeade and they have good foot long coneys with onions and yellow mustard. Bon Appetit.

  • JonnyMo September 28, 2009

I worked at Sonic in college in Texas. That place was pretty cool and I learned to flip a mean burger while earning some extra cash. At my age now, the body doesn’t do so well with burgers all week, but ya, I’ll be there. Just to see if they can get the food from the grill to the car without toppling over on their roller skates!

There is supposed to be one built in Silverdale also…does anyone know any further information on when that one will be announced? Opening? Thanks!

  • MattonGrant September 28, 2009

I’ve never been to one but…

    I do like Tater-Tots.

In a perfect world, The Little Holland burger stand would have left Fircrest and moved to this proposed Sonic location. Instead, Little Holland has died and has been replaced with a gristleburger joint with a menu tailored to the tastes of people who yearn to give their children diabetes.

It’s similar to finding out that all of the Beatles’ songs has been destroyed without trace, and will be replaced by 3 Doors Down cover-versions.

I ate at the Sonics in Puyallup. They have a long way to go for improvement. I don’t see what all the excitement is about…same when Krispy Kreme came to town. Blah, yuck. I’ll stick with the old drive-ins and mom and pop bakeries, thanks.
However, I like “Chick fil A” in Texas and the only one here is in Bellingham. Better than the Colonel’s or Popeyes.

Tacoma already has too many national chain restarants.

Just what we need, another place to get e. coli from.
