2012 South Sound Sustainability Expo

The South Sound Sustainability Expo is coming up this Saturday, March third. The Expo, open and free to the public, is designed to showcase services, products, companies, and agencies that address sustainability issues in the Tacoma area.

This year Expo participants will learn about a variety of local goods and services, and have the opportunity to participate in workshops on a variety of urban-homesteading type topics.

Workshops this year will include:
City Chickens 101
Starting a Food Garden: Soil & Seeds
Greener Cleaners: Make Your Own: Ingredients & How To
Reading Labels: Commercial Products
Composting Worm Bins

New this year: Kid’s Corner activities, including:
Animal habitat games & activities
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle games
Fish crafts

Designed for residents and business owners looking for ways to be more sustainable, this is the fifth year of the annual South Sound Sustainability Expo, which will feature transportation alternatives, green construction, energy conservation, waste minimization and recycling, alternative energy sources, global climate change initiatives, and how to be economically efficient while being environmentally sustainable.

The Expo comes out of a consortium of Tacoma and Pierce County colleges and universities beginning back in 2008, and continues as a partnership between UWT, PLU, UPS, and now the City of Tacoma. In each of the first years the event was hosted at one of the involved schools. When the City of Tacoma’s Office of Sustainability was created in 2010 the Expo moved to the Convention Center, where it will be held again this year.

When: Saturday, March 3, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Where: Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, 1500 Broadway, Tacoma
Cost: FREE entry.

A total of 70 vendors have signed up to participate on Saturday. This means you’ll have an opportunity to learn about dozens of services, products, companies and agencies that will help you be more sustainable. (It also means no more vendor slots are available.)
