Spokane vs. Tacoma

You’ve got to read this.

You may remember a good laugh Tacoma had at Spokane’s expense last year thanks to Tagro, and a city council member with a sense of humor (okay who are we kidding with the past-tense, we’re still laughing at that one). Well, apparently the Spokane journalist who was on the receiving end of has still got a bit of a chip on his shoulder. And he’s received another package, from Peter Callaghan at The News Tribune. This morning’s article from Spokane’s Spokesman Review’s Doug Clark, recounts his reaction to receiving the latest package, and it has a slight air of bitterness to it. No, that’s wrong; his tone is outright spiteful/peevish/antagonistic.

The whole thing started over the question of which city comes in second for population, after Seattle, and it’s usually a pretty close match. This year, apparently Spokane won, and the gloating began. The 2010 US Census settled it for now: 198,397 for Tacoma, 208,916 for Spokane. Okay, congratulations. But is that really cause for the snide gloating? Is bigger really better?
