Sponsor Your Own Walking Wednesday

Here's an interesting opportunity: Downtown On the Go is inviting organizations and individuals to dream up their own events aimed at promoting walking for transportation, health, and community well-being around Tacoma.

Last week more than 200 people showed up at Wright Park for the kick off of the Walk Tacoma 2014 series. DOTG has organized the series of Walk Tacoma events on the first and third Wednesdays of the month through summer, but they want to get the community in on it, and make every Wednesday a Walking Wednesday.

DOTG offers a few suggestions, but invites you to think creatively, too:

  • Promote and attend a Downtown On the Go Walk Tacoma event (1st and 3rd Wednesdays)
  • Join DOTG’s monthly Walk to Work (4th Wednesday of the month)
  • Host a walk at work at lunchtime
  • Hold a walking meeting on Wednesday
  • Identify a meeting point for a group walk to (or from) work
  • Provide an incentive for walking to work
  • Add a walking article to your employee newsletter or bulletin board

DOTG invites you to come up with an idea to help get people walking, and they will make sure your event gets posted to the Transportation Choices Coalition Calendar, and publicized by Transportation Choices and Downtown On the Go. Read more at DowntownOnTheGo.com.

If you're just looking for somewhere to walk this Wednesday, think about joining DOTG for their walking audit of downtown Tacoma today, and be prepared for this evening's Talk the Walk public meeting on where pedestrian improvements are needed in the downtown area. If you can't make the meeting, or have ideas about walking improvements elsewhere in Tacoma, you can still let the City know via an online questionnaire.

So, who's got a creative idea to get people walking?

Congratulations to Walk Tacoma on their Stadium District tour. Got a day without rain! It was well organized, and informative. One suggestion. A more leisurely pace would be appreciated. It was a bit brisk for some of us. I saw one lady trip and fall. I'm looking forward to attending future tours.
