State AG Moving to the Brewery District?
Will the State Attorney General’s office move to Tacoma’s brewery district?
According to the TNT, MJR Development holds the winning bid to the AG’s RFP. Their proposal would put the 100 person office in the Jet building at South 21st and Jefferson – a building owned by our favorite local one eyed glass artist, Dale Chihuly. UWT also expressed surprise at the winning proposal, since this area was considered ideal for potential student housing.
The catch? Interestingly enough, the building was not on the market or currently, from what it sounds like, close to being sold. The state’s process didn’t require that the property included in a proposal be controlled by the developer. This could lead to some interesting situations we imagine …
That said, a popular rumor a few weeks ago had the Attorney General moving into the downtown Tacoma post office in a proposal led by Herb Simon.
So we’re very curious where this goes next. Does Chihuly sell? What will UWT do? What other options may still be on the table?

I wouldn’t sell that building if I were a one eyed glass artist. That area has more upside potential than most in Tacoma.

I hear you, 6ther, but the area may not realize the potential unless some employers locate there. Sort of an awkward chicken-and-egg situation for the glass man. I hope for Tacoma’s sake that he sells. 100 jobs won’t fill the Russell gap, but it would be a start.

Remember that these are 100 jobs that already exist in Tacoma. They are just moving from one building downtown to another building downtown in the Brewery District.

Any excuse to add more class A office space downtown sounds great to me. I’ve heard of so many employers wanting to locate downtown, only to be turned away because of the lack of office space.
Certainly not a problem now that this crappy economy is in full swing, but over the long term it can’t hurt to have room for 100 more professionals downtown.

Just getting people in the Brewery district is a win.
Now how about resurrecting Alt Heidelberg?
Can’t have a “brewery district” without some breweries…
