Summer Reading: Jane Jacobs

Anyone up for a classic this month?

Jane Jacobs’ “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” is a strong condemnation of the urban policies the US embraced in the 50’s. Written in 1961, the book advocates for big changes in dealing with cities and became incredibly influential to urban planning.

Reading it should help anyone get a better understanding what cities like Tacoma are facing and what might help, but it’s a dense read. That’s why we think we should read it together.

“The Death and Life of Great American Cities” is our first choice for the Exit133 Book Club (we’ll develop a sticker someday). We’ll launch an area in the forums for discussion and in August we’ll have a night out over drinks to wrap up discussion.

Kings Books is standing by, so get your orders in this week for quick delivery.

If you want to participate in the on-line forums but don’t live in Tacoma, here’s Amazon’s page for the book. But in the spirit of Ms. Jacobs, we think that if you live in Tacoma you should walk down to Kings Books before going on-line …

We’ll try to get a few learned people into the forums with us to pose some good questions. Plan on discussion starting sometime next week!
