Summit Charter School Comes to Dome District

If you've driven down Puyallup Avenue recently, you may have noticed a major renovation being done on the old Salvation Army building at the corner of Puyallup Avenue and D Street.

The 1929 brick building at 409 Puyallup Avenue has been sitting empty, but next fall it will open its doors as Summit Public Schools' Olympus campus.

The Los Angeles-based charter school company plans to open in Tacoma with 120 9th graders in its first year, expanding to a full four-year high school by 2018. Summit held an open house last week, and has another scheduled for January 29.

A high school located in the Dome District could potentially change the feel of at least its most immediate surroundings, bringing more foot traffic to the area. What the impact of charter schools will be is less certain.

And hopefully the Washington State Supreme Court will find them in violation of the state constitution and correct that awful decision (by a very narrow margin) to allow these profit making operations to steal from our tax system. Disgusting!!!
