Tacoma Adds Festivus Pole on Broadway

The Tacoma City Council has decided to add a Festivus Pole at 9th & Broadway to recognize those who celebrate Festivus, tomorrow, December 23.

“We understand some Tacomans have chosen to celebrate Festivus,” said Mayor Bill Baarsma, “and we want to include them in our annual holiday celebrations.” The Festivus Pole, a 6 foot aluminum pole (chosen for its high strength to weight ratio) mounted vertically in the ground, will be placed next to the Christmas tree and the Menorah on the plaza at 9th & Broadway.

Festivus was invented by Frank Costanza, George Costanza’s father on “Seinfeld.” The holiday is Frank’s way to celebrate without the commercialism and hype around Christmas.

In an exclusive interview with Exit133, Baarmsa revealed that the City Council celebrated Festivus together every year as part of a December Study Session. The holiday is noted for its “airing of grievances” and “feats of strength” which Baarsma said were therapeutic for the Council.

“We really get into the airing of grievances,” said Councilwoman Connie Ladenburg. Councilmembers were mum on who regularly won the feats of strength.

“While we have regularly celebrated the holiday, we didn’t know there was an interest elsewhere in Tacoma until after Tuesday’s City Council meeting,” Baarsma said. “At the close of the meeting I found four protestors outside with banners reading ‘Festivus for the rest of us!’ It was like a Festivus miracle!”

With the revelation that there were other Festivus celebrators in the city, the Council acted quickly and officially proclaimed December 23 as Festivus in the City of Tacoma.

And so in the holiday spirit, Exit133 would like to wish all its readers a very happy Festivus.
