Tacoma Christmas 2008 - Introductions
As we pass the Turkey holiday and head toward the gift giving season, we are once again focusing on local businesses with our Very Tacoma Christmas series. Why? Because sometimes you want to infuse a bit of Tacoma grit in your gift giving. Plus, it supports local business.
When we did this last year, several of you asked that we never do it again. Why? Because it emphasized spending money and got “boring”. Well … if you’re going to spend money anyway, spend it locally. Then, when we had our reader survey, we discovered that 37% of you bought something for someone because of the Tacoma Christmas series. Crazy. As for boring, well, there’s plenty else to read.
With that said, we realize that the current economic climate may dictate frugality and simple gifts. In which case, maybe this is more of a guide to remind you of some of our local shops and opportunities. All of them are here year round. They need your love year round. Now may not be the best time … but it’s Christmas-time anyway.
Stay tuned.

Nice.
while saving your hard-earned $$$ is pivotal during a severe recession, come Christmas some things get bought.
I’d rather give my $ to fellow Tacomans and small businesses than some corporate oligarchy (I’m talking to you, Walmart).
-> Bring on the suggestions!

I’m giving everyone locally grown, organic produce this year with a gift delivery from Spud!

Quick!
Let the collective brainpower of the Tacoma-Hive-Mind solve a problem…
My sister wants perfume for Christmas. Anyone know a local shop with reasonably priced perfumes?
Heck, locally-produced perfumes would be even better!

Don’t listen to the naysayers who say it is boring! I’m relatively new and am always looking for cool stores to spend my $$ at year round but I also figure that if I’m hauling gifts home on an airplane (and paying the obscene baggage fees they said were due to fuel prices but kept even after fuel prices plummeted…) I at least want to be taking unique local things that they can’t get there.
