Tacoma City Business - Week of August 7, 2012

It’s election night tonight (in case you managed to miss that little detail), and that means two things:

  1. Today’s the day to get your ballot in.
  2. Tonight’s City Council meeting will be a short one, so you can all go out and celebrate democracy.

With that in mind, there are only a few items on the agenda.

Wages and Benefits
The two resolutions on this week’s agenda both authorize collective bargaining agreements with unions. One with Teamsters Local Union No. 117, General Unit (approximately 239 positions), and the second with Local Lodge No. 297 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Yard Clerk Unit (approximately 5 positions). The one ordinance up for a first reading this week amends the Tacoma Municipal Code relating to compensation for these two groups.

Budget Update
This week’s City Council study session features a Second Quarter 2012 Financial Status Update including funds supported by the General Fund and General Government Utility Funds.

Brownfield Funding
Another item that may be of interest is up for discussion at this week’s Committee of the Whole meeting. Council will be discussing re-re-purposing $3 million in LTGO bonds raised in 2009. The funds were originally raised for Brownfield remediation. In May of this year they were re-purposed for the Point Ruston Waterwalk project. In the last couple months two other Brownfield projects have been identified as needing assistance with remediation costs. One is the future site of the Waterway Park on the Foss Waterway, which went significantly over budget when soil contamination was discovered to be more extensive than originally supposed. The second is the City-owned property at 21st and Jefferson, which has been discussed as a site for a proposed new Asia Pacific Cultural Center project, and has been undergoing an environmental assessment, and will need clean up before any development can occur.

So there you have it. Go forth and vote if you haven’t yet. If have, good work.
