Tacoma College Entrepreneur Network Launches

An exciting new partnership is launching between four tacoma area colleges. The University of Puget Sound, the University of Washington Tacoma, Pacific Lutheran University, and The Evergreen State College are partnering to form the Tacoma College Entrepreneur Network. The Network, which will launch this weekend with an event called “Inovate! Create!” on the UPS campus, will give students from all four schools the chance to test the waters of the entrepreneurial career path.

This weekend’s inaugural event will pose a problem, and challenge teams of students to create a business or nonprofit to solve it. The winning team, judged by entrepreneur and investor judges, will take home new iPads. The collaborative program aims to provide students with opportunities to develop both the skills and the local support networks they will need to launch a small business.

Those two words: “Small business” make up a phrase that has been anointed with almost magical powers in the recent economic and political climate. Small businesses are regarded by many as the job and revenue creating engines that will power our economy back to full strength and re-invigorate our communities. Tacoma could be looking at a great new source of innovative business people with the foundation they need to be successful. The students at this weekend’s competition could be the next generation of movers and shakers Tacoma needs to get the economy moving again.

Collaboration and competition. We like the sound of that.
