Tacoma Food Co-op: Hopeful "Perhaps"
The concept of the Tacoma Food Co-op has been around for years, supported by an enthusiastic band of volunteers. Lately, we’ve heard claims that public support is building to levels nearly sufficient to turn the dream into four walls and shelves.
Most of the talk has centered around the building currently containing Neighborhood Market, conveniently located near near the 6th Avenue hot spot and foodie destination, Taco Bell (which is also incidentally near The Red Hot, Cork! Wine Bar and a shuttered teriyaki joint). It seems the Co-op group is not the only party interested in picking up the lease when Neighborhood Market closes, but no deal has been reached as of yet.
More information on the progress of the Co-op to date can be found at the following links:

The TNT reports that the Co-op is waiting to hear if the 6th Ave location is theirs

We would LOVE to have a co-op in our neighborhood! It would give us all healthier options in a neighborhood that has a big pedestrian/bike corridor. And it would do something to combat the bar culture…

I think it would complement the Red Hot culture and combat the Chopstix dueling pianos culture and perhaps the “gruv” (sorry, don’t know how to get an umlaut in there) culture. Go co-op!

There is a reason we have a bicycle with a basket on it.

Sixth ave is in decline. I think this will be next in series.
The growth started with Hell’s Kitchen coming to Sixth and the decline started when they left. Look at the area they moved to is booming now.
Word is that the “big boys” of sixth ave are looking at vacant buildings in the Stadium District, South Tacoma Way and McKinlely Business District.
Wait for big announcements by the end of the month.
