Tacoma is Tall Ships Port of the Year

A fleet of tall ships sailed into Tacoma back in July. A few days later, they were gone. Now, for the second time, Tacoma has been named the Tall Ships Port of the Year. Two for two. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Now about that little debt …

Yeah, I’m wondering if a cash prize comes with this honor.

Well, if we can ever get Dock Street more populated and with restaurants ‘n stuff, then the triennial Tall Ships Festival could be the prize in and of itself.
I mean, think about it… if the Tall Ships crew come back every 3 years, it’s infrequent enough to make the festival something special. Especially if they could get more mock battles, and more ships. Hell, even capitalize on the pirate thing. Pirates are quite popular these days.
Check out all those T’s:

it’s the TTTSF!

I had the best time escorting ships in and out to battle with my boat – lots of hours and little recognition, but wouldn’t have missed it for anything. There’s just something about a tall ship that can only be understood if you’re there…
Can’t wait for next time!

If you read Kathleen Merryman’s column today, we can only hope that this honor comes with a $500,000 prize to retire the defecit…. or maybe a federal bailout is in order.

I was so thrilled to go Tacoma Tall Ships. I worked on the Hawaiian Chieftain for a month in August 2007. When we came to Tacoma with the Lady, hardly anybody knew we were down there. Everyone came out to see the Tall Ships in 2008 though. Which is so cool because their such a part of history and such a magnificant marvel. Can’t wait for the next Tall Ship Festival! I am so in heaven when they arrive!

The TTTSF could be a major to-do if it was made an official city holiday.
And not like July 25th being ZZ Top day (who remembers that one?).
I mean like a BIG deal, sales at the mall, a Tacoma Triennial Tall Ships Tree for your house, presents and chocolate covered eyepatches.
If we’re losing $$$, we may as well do it with style.
