Tacoma Neighborhood Makeover Week
It’s officially spring now, and therefore officially the season to get out into the yard and start taking care of that outdoor to-do list. If you need a little inspiration or a little guidance (or maybe a lot of inspiration and guidance) the City of Tacoma has a whole week of workshops and other events lined up for Neighborhood Makeover Week, April 22 through 28. The week-long event is aimed at bringing Tacomans out to collectively put our yards and neighborhoods in order for spring.
Free workshops will be taking place all week all over town on topics including:
- Interior Home Maintenance – Basics of painting, drywall, patch repair, caulking, etc
- Weeds/weed control
- Exterior Home Maintenance – Basics of caulking, siding repair, shingle replacement, etc.
- Tree Basics: Selection, planting, care and pruning
- Natural Yard Care 101: Designing and installing your natural yard care landscape
- Edible Landscaping
- Fight Crime at Home – CPTED Strategies for Making Your Home Safer
- Rain Barrels
- Bulb Exchange: There’s a Bulb for That
If you’re ready to step beyond your own projects, the City is also inviting volunteers to help weed, trim, make home repairs, pick up litter, plant trees, and more in the selected “Makeover Neighborhood” on Saturday, April 28. The project is accepting donations of cash, or in-kind donations of tools, plants, materials and other supply needs.
Tacoma Neighborhood Makeover Week
When: Sunday, April 22 through Saturday, April 28
Where: Workshops at a variety of locations.
Cost: FREE
Details: For more information, and to register for workshops, visit www.tacomamakeoverweek.org.
This seems like the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors a little better. Or maybe it’s just a good time to start dropping subtle hints to that neighbor with the overgrown yard. Who knows, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship…

I think it’s so awesome that Tacoma is hosting all these really useful workshops. I don’t think it’s so awesome that so many of the workshops start at 4 (specifically, most of the workshops I’m interested in), what about all the folks who work until 5? (Doesn’t the world revolve around me?) Still, thanks Tacoma, for the awesome opportunities.

This is great stuff! I’ve always thought that Tacoma was a great town but under maintained.

“…its just tacoma we don’t care” — …
Congrats! That attitude is the #1 reason parts of Tacoma suck. Don’t you think there’s a reason you’ve gotten five flyers?
Look around. With the abundance of craftsman homes and historical buildings still in place, most of Tacoma just needs maintenance and it would be NICER than most northwest towns. Yes. I said NICER!
