Tacoma School Board Picks New Super

Given the EIGHT breaking news emails we received from The News Tribune, we figured this might be important. The Tacoma School Board voted 4 to 1 to begin contract negotiations with their top choice for superintendent. Their pick? Former longtime Enumclaw School District Superintendent and Tacoma’s current interim superintendent Art Jarvis.

Back to sleep now.

    good.

A cautious decision by a Board who got burned before…go with the guy you know. Time will tell if this choise is good for kids and academic achievement. I’d like to see what measurable changes the new Superintendent is committed to making to reduce the achievement gap for children of color and lower-income children. Then I’d like to see regular progress reports.

We were afraid you might miss the first 7 breaking news emails so we went with No. 8. ;)

Some gremlins got in the machine again and the emails kind of took on a life of their own. We’re fixing the problem, though, so you won’t have to weather an email storm the next time news breaks.

    Sorry for the flurry.

I agree with citywonk. A safe and cautious choice.

Interesting that a national search gives us the guy we have and one with no prior superintendent experience. Count me supportive but skeptical.

Our schools won’t be able to solve their substantial problems on their own. I encourage Dr. Jarvis to actively and aggressively involve the community and support families. Having a schools role in early learning efforts would be a good start.

    Squid @4:

Just a quick note, Dr. Jarvis does have prior superintendent experience. He was the super of the Enumclaw School District for most of my education. Enumclaw and Tacoma are not the same by any means, but he has held the position before.

If I’m the Manager of Baskin-Robbins does that qualify me to be the Manager of Costco?
Why can’t Tacoma hire a Super that has actually spent time in a classroom?
If you are going to stick with what you have, why spend the money to look?
More wasted time, effort and money. Certainly no surprises on any point.

Whitney@5, my comment refered to Dr. Jarvis (the one we have) and Alan Ingram (the one with no experience). I’m fully aware that Dr. Jarvis has been the Superintendent of two small districts in Whidbey and Enumclaw. My point was that the national search didn’t turn up much in the way of options.

A district the size of Tacoma does a NATIONAL search and finds we have the very best person in the country already, and that we found him on an abbreivated interim search?

    I’m less than impressed.

TPS already had the best choice but they stabbed her in the back and she left. Now they end up with this guy who ran Enumclaw. How sensitive can a Sup from Enumclaw be to the needs of Tacoma’s minority kids? Seems like the board caved in under pressure from the parents of those that are already achieving.

Wow, feel the love for the Claw.

Is Jarvis now going to move from Enumclaw and start paying taxes for his school district? I’d like to see how soon, if anytime, this lame duck superintendent moves to Tacoma. Don’t ask me to pay more taxes upwards to $7000 property taxes if you don’t move to Tacoma fellow. I’m waiting….

  • me April 27, 2008

    yes, he’s moving to Tacoma

  • marco April 28, 2008

So when is Dr. Jarvis moving to Tacoma? Why didn’t he move when he was the interim superintendent? I’d like to know how soon he moves to Tacoma. He should be here by today, not tomorrow. He has no excuses. We’re waiting for him to start paying his school district, county taxes today, not tomorrow. This guy is an empty suit.
