THA to Buy Rhodes from State?
The Tacoma Housing Authority (THA) is considering a purchase of the Rhodes Department Store, currently owned by the State.
Over the course of the last 30 years the building has passed from one institution to another. The UPS Law School took it over in 1980 after it had nearly been destroyed. Then the law school was sold to Seattle University and it moved out of the building in 1999. In February of this year, it was reported that the State was losing millions on it annually with millions more in deferred maintenance.
Which brings us to September, when the Tacoma Housing Authority met and authorized their Executive Director to negotiate a purchase and bring it back to the board for approval.
What would they do with the building?
According to the resolution, the THA wants the building to provide an income source to the organization; office space for the staff; housing development; and the nebulous phrase “to contribute to the continuing revitalization of the City.”
In addition to the building, the State would also be selling the Market Street building and the accompanying parking garage.

The Crane folding sounds nice and everything, but seriously, there is only one must-see event a First Night this year:
Valentine’s Performing Pigs, 6-6:45 p.m.
Pig Olympics, a large World Class Stage Act! Jumping pigs, “ham-dunking” mini-pigs, pigs energetically playing soccer, golf, bowling, football, and skateboarding! Different from the pig races, the amazing and hilarious porkers are something people have never witnessed before, and probably never will again. Each incredible and adorable show is followed by a “Meet and Greet” the pigs session with the audience. As seen on Letterman, Oprah, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Animal Planet. Starring Nellie, World’s Smartest Pig!
‘Nuff said.
