The Curse of Tollefson Plaza

It would seem that Downtown Tacoma’s award winning public space, Tollefson Plaza, is once again without management. The Chamber announced yesterday that it was walking away from its contract with the City after 18 months. From the BIA Blog:

… the recent and current economic situation has made it extremely difficult to secure adequate funding and sponsorships to fully underwrite staffing and appropriate marketing for meaningful programming of the Plaza.

Unfortunately, those challenging economic conditions and Plaza design issues have combined to thwart the Chamber’s ambitions to provide active management and programming for Tollefson Plaza. As a result, the Chamber has requested to be released from its license agreement with the City of Tacoma.

The place needs to get moved to 6th Ave and restored. It would be an awesome addition to the 6th Ave bar / restaurant scene. With the potential business from the new location, it would make financial sense to restore / preserve the place. BUT.... now that it is on the National Register.. they're screwed... I'm sure it can never be moved and any attempt at restoration would be so full of red tape, its not worth it. The place will be closed within two years and completely deteriorated within 6 - 8. It would be so great to restore it, in a new location. The new place could pay homage to another old Tacoma bar, now gone and lost for the ages...... The Goldfish. We could have The Goldfish Room at Bob's Java Jive. I'll be sad when its gone.

  I vote Pugnetti Park in downtown Tacoma at Pacific and 21st. That is a horribly hostile (surrounded by major traffic and roads) park that almost nobody uses anyways.
