The First 2008 ArtWalk

Hey kids, it’s Third Thursday and Artwalk tonight. A couple interesting things worth calling out tonight.

The Middle Floor Merchants at Sanford & Sons has three galleries open tonight, The Lark, The Darkroom, and The Middle Floor Gallery. Across the street Ellen Ito of Seattle and Tacoma’s own Nicholas Nyland have a show at The Helm Gallery.

Tonight is also the first opening of the Grand Impromptu Gallery at 608 Fawcett. Formerly the Art on Center, the gallery has become a co-op for local artists to show their work. The artists include Bill Colby, Bea Geller, Trinda Love, Dorothy McCuistion, Jason Sobottka and Chip VanGilder.

There’s also the University of Washington Tacoma Gallery at 1742 Pacific Avenue with Tacoma-based photographer Victoria Bjorklund.

All in all, you won’t be hurting for options tonight.

Don’t forget to check out Deborah Page playing at Sanford and Son as well.

I wholeheartedly enjoyed her music at First Night!

Wow, During my normal downtown dog walk last night I actually had to ask people to move on the glass bridge. I was really impressed with how many people turned out for this, atleast outside of the exhibits.

Sadly, on St. Helens, Tullys was not open late enough. A nippy evening, they could have sold a lot of coffee. No wonder the company (not the local store) is in a lot of trouble. It would be my dream to see Tullys as a locally owned and run coffee shop. The Tullys corporate office doesn’t have a clue about what is going on around their Tacoma shop. Arts walk, every 3d Thursday. Sell some coffee, but more importantly, be part of the community. Picture the Blackwater Cafe people running Tullys.

It seems that Starbucks is in bit of trouble themselves these days. Could it be that corporate coffee has had its day in the sun?

    Crenshaw,
When I tried to book the room upstairs at Tully’s for a meeting I was told they were open until 7pm and the meeting was already planned for 7:30pm. I was told there wasn’t enough business to stay open later. Seems like some other coffee houses have no problem with biz later in the evening. Maybe Tullys should get a little creative.

As a Third Thursday Regular, my impressions are:

    - I like The Helm, but not this time. Big Beetle (VW) in the room.

    - Sanford & Sons. Under appreciated. They moved the music to the auction area so lots of room. But nobody there. Art show was good. Plus the Vintner’s Loft had a great wine tasting. I’ve never had a WA Malbec before. It was very good.

    - Tacoma Art Museum. Another wow. Yes the Renoir prints are getting raves, but the PNW AF AM Quilter show dazzled me.

    - MOG – Same O, Same O. Usual good time in the hot shop, always a consistent good time now they are focusing on glass.

    - WA History – Shards of Glass – Shows how bad things were 60 years ago.

My post 3rd-Thursday was at The Harmon.
