The Poor Old Post Office

What’s to become of the circa 1909 downtown post office when it’s… no longer a post office?  Dan Voelpel writes in the News Tribune tha the “...old building and the nearby asphalt lot where postal delivery trucks park sit in the heart of downtown Tacoma. They serve as a blockade to longstanding redevelopment plans and a monument to your agency’s unfulfilled promises.”

I’ve received a couple emails from folks appalled that this building may be bulldozed for a mixed use project.  On the other hand, I’ve received several emails in support of the quick disposal or reuse of this building.  What’s the best use for the city?  Is this building a significant piece of downtown’s cultural fabric… or is it in the way?

Personally, I think we have a lot more in the way of downtown redevelopment than a single large building.  And as far as buildings go, they don’t make them like this anymore…

Update: Redevelopment and not necessarily bulldozed.  The wording of the article seems to have left at least a few folks confused as to what could be.  Read the comments for more.

Full Disclosure: My PO Box is in this post office and I chose this location because I liked the architecture of the space.  I’m strange that way.
