The Stadium Bowl: A Photographic Tribute

The iconic bowl at Stadium High School will turn 100 years old in 2 days. A celebration of its centennial will be held this weekend, complete with historic reenactments, sporting events, and a food drive that may well break a world record. For more information on the planned festivities, visit CelebrateStadium.com. To participate in the food drive, visit Fillthebowl.org.

Mayor Strickland spoke on the significance of the Stadium bowl in her opening coments at yesterday’s City Council meeting. Earlier in the day, Peter Callaghan of the Tacoma News Tribune submitted a beautiful summary of its history. In the spirit of these fitting tributes, we thought we’d share a few photographs of this familiar Tacoma landmark by our friend Kevin Lidtka.

Less photoshop tweeking please. They are somewhat blinding. Otherwise they are nice shots. Good composition. Great sky. If they weren’t so post processed they could be very good.

i did the photos a heap of disservices in resizing them. in order to keep the size manageable for the site, i had to reduce the size and lost a lot of definition. created a lot of distortion and color-fields.

Great story! Pierce County’s Emergency Food Network and Northwest Harvest are getting ready to set a Guinness World Record at the Bowl this weekend for the largest food drive ever held during a 24-hour period! Bring your can(s) and come on over to the Bowl starting Friday, September 17 at 4 pm through Saturday, September 18 at 4 pm…and be not only a part of breaking a Guinness World record but also helping feed those in need throughout Western Washington.

Yeah, minus the oft overdone HDR those would be lovely photos. Thanks for sharing!

How many more boring, straight-ahead pictures of the bowl do you want? I guarantee there’s 100 years worth you could track down.

I think these look amazing. Bravo, Kevin!

Don’t forget if you can’t come you can text HUNGER to 85944 and contribute $10…and you can do that up to 5 times!! Help us break the record!

I’ll echo the points re: HDRsoft, but that’s a personal preference. There’s a lot of solid photographic talent in Tacoma that has payed homage to the bowl more times than once with nothing but the glass and the chemicals. Tacoma’s clear days have more than enough dynamic range if you know how to find it.

@Claire- Word is, Tacoma Runners will be doing an event this week that will be contributing to that very effort. Thursday at 6:30, Corner Bar/Hanks. Bring food and a hankering to run and drink a beer or two!

Gotta love Stadium Bowl. My own personal favorite memory is waking up at 2:00 am and toodling down to run my hour leg of the Relay For Life. Surreal.

Makes me wonder, what are we building today that people will be celebrating in 100 years? Narrows Bridge II? Chambers Bay? That’s about it on my list.

I kind of like the “old postcard” look. Especially in the third photo.

One million pounds of food a month.

That’s what is distributed through our local Pierce County food bank network – IN ONE MONTH!

Come on…Tacoma… you can do this…clean out your cupboards.

    Stimulate the economy – locally.

See post #9 if you cringe at going anywhere near Stadium Sistrict and come on down to ….
South Tacoma (Where Everything Happens!! Tm)

and drop of your non-perishable food.
