The Year of the Sheep - Monkeyshines 2015

With the transition from the Year of the Horse to the Year of the Sheep set to occur in less than a month, we wondered if once again the Monkeys would come out and bring their glass gifts to our city. Every year the lovely people of Tacoma try to glean any hint of when Monkeyshines will arrive. Will it be on Chinese New Year or some other day? After eleven years, will the Year of the Sheep be the last one? It is the end of the Chinese calendar cycle...

A blog post by the “Naughty Monkey,” the one who tipped us off to some details a few years ago, suggests that Monkeyshines may not occur. The Monkeys are frustrated. The hunters are relentless. Nevertheless, we know of at least a few people who are getting twitchy and are looking forward to the possibility of staring deep into hedges and behind rocks as they walk through town. Will the Monkeys come out for their final year?

After exchanging a few messages on Google+ with the Naughty Monkey, we were finally able to meet up. They arrived at the back of a nondescript Tacoma bar after riding the light rail and three buses. Some notes went on the table and I was able to ask some questions.

In spite of what you may have read, Monkeyshines will happen this year. The Monkeys are working hard to make it happen. They’re going to go big. There will be four different stamps to reflect a goat/sheep/ram theme. The Monkeys will hide a lot more art than before - and not just glass.

That said, there was tremendous frustration coming out of last year. Monkeys were stalked and followed. Glass was being grabbed instantly after being hidden. The result? A date change. When? We don’t know. Naught Monkey didn’t know. But it won’t be when you expect it.

If followed, the Monkeys will stop distributing the art. They will go back into hiding and return another time. Furthermore, as I was warned, if cornered or threatened, they will resort to traditional monkey defensive techniques - not to put too fine a point on it, they have threatened to fling poop.

You can still help make this year even bigger and shinier. Ms. Monkey has a special Year of the Sheep thank you for individuals that contribute $100 to Monkeyshines. There's still time to join the cause, and be a part of making this the best Monkeyshines ever.

This is the end of the cycle. It seems highly likely that this will be the last year of Monkeyshines, Tacoma. Let’s do it.

The same rule applies as in previous years: Take just one.

Find something? See something beautiful while hunting. Send us your photos at tips (at) exit133.com.

Just keep looking, I finally found one about 30 minutes ago at 1:15 in the morning floating in the pond at Wright Park. I have been looking since Thursday morning. This is my first time looking for them. I just found out about this last month.

The following image appeared in our inbox with the caption, "A picture says a thousand words."
• mama&cubs; January 22, 2015

Does this mean it has begun? Has it really? Or is this just marble man?
• Peter Peter January 22, 2015

This looks like Marbleman and not the official hunt. Thank you, Marbleman!
• Lola January 23, 2015

I would like to donate to Monkey Shines...we love them and appreciate their gift of art. We have never actually found any monkeyshine beauties, but we always love the hunt. Please let me know how to contribute funds. Thank you, Lola
• Terie January 24, 2015

Here is one way to help: Ms. Monkey has a special Year of the Sheep thank you for individuals that contribute $100 to Monkeyshines - /articles/view/a-very-special-monkeyshines-opportunity#.VMQe8EfF9ih .
• Lola February 22, 2015

done! Thank you-may the spirit of the MonkeyShine live on!
• Marie & boys January 24, 2015

Thanks Marbleman for getting us so excited for the Year of the Sheep! We found marbles on our walk after dinner. We love to walk Tacoma, especially when there is a treasure found! Thank you for the memory. Marie and boys
• Desirae January 28, 2015

does this mean it wont be the traditional 1/31 early wee early hours of the morning? When will we know further information - looking forward to taking my kids out this year. Thanks!!! :)
• Morgan January 30, 2015

You'll just have to keep looking! There is never any guarantee that they are put out on a specific day, and this year they chose to be more secretive about it and not give hints and possibly change the dates they go out. It's just supposed to be something you happen upon for good luck, not an organized one day event that everyone finds something. Good luck! :)
• Roxanne February 6, 2015

It's traditionally on Chinese New Year, which falls on a different date every year. This year it's February 19. Though it sounds like that won't matter much this year. Who knows when they will hide them!
• Morgan January 31, 2015

Just an FYI for all those itching to hunt, the Chinese New Year is Thursday, February 19th this year. Perhaps we are a little too anxious for some January finds?
• Whitney February 5, 2015

Has anyone else found anything yet?! If so be sure to post pictures here or use the hashtag #monkeyshines2015 on social media for us all to see! I find myself looking for a hint that the hunt has begun as I walk around town. Seeing that Marble Man is out in full force fuels the fire. I can't wait to see what Ms. Monkey comes up with this year.
• marbleman February 6, 2015

Hi everybody, Happy Year of the Ram. Time to ramp things up! Let the good times roll! See ya out there! ~Marbleman
• mama&cubs; February 6, 2015

Thanks marbleman!! We have some marbles from a couple years ago, makes the cubs so happy. Good luck to one and all!!
• JJ February 13, 2015

I found this today. I took a marble and left the rest for others to find. There were a lot of signs in that park as well "believe" "joy", etc., not certain if those are some of the new Monkeyshines or not. Did not see any of the traditional glass blown monkeyshines today.
• The Hunter February 6, 2015

I sure can't wait!!
• Mama&Cubs; February 9, 2015

Just saw a post from Naughty Monkey that sounded an awful lot like it has begun. Am I wrong? Do I need to suddenly get sick at work? Ms. Monkey, is it time? I had my eyes peeled all weekend and didn't see anything....

• Oma#7 February 9, 2015

Can anyone tell me if Lakewood, University Place or Steilacoom are included?????
• Dawn February 10, 2015

No, I think just Tacoma (& south Tacoma, but not as far as Lakewood)
• Oma#7 February 10, 2015

Thanks for the answer. The sun is out---wish it was now. Has it started??????
• Peter Peter February 10, 2015

Steilacoom has been included in the past. I found one hidden there a few years ago and I've heard of others. I don't know about Lakewood or UP.

Oh poo and I'm at work in Kent. My kids are even off today. I hope this is just the start and there will be lots and lots for people to find (that and that everyone is in the same boat I am, stuck at work!). If you see us out there tonight (I'm the tall redhead with three monkeys) say hi! Good luck everyone, hope you find one!
• AndreaW February 13, 2015

I saw Naughty Monkey's post a little after 7:00 this morning. As luck would have it I have the day off. What did I get for my time? A more than full fitness tracker - over 20,000 steps so far today - and a positive attitude for the rest of the day. No Monkeyshines yet, but I look forward to seeing what other people find! Good luck everyone!
• Mama&Cubs; February 13, 2015

Naughty monkey is very naughty indeed. The Trib is reporting that the bulk of the monkeyshines haven't been released into the wild yet. Those of us at work rejoice! I still love you naughty monkey...
• Silly Monkey February 13, 2015

Looks like Naughty Monkey posted a globe from the Year of the Snake
• naughtymonkey February 13, 2015

Yes, please stay home in your nice warm bed. The Naughty Monkey knows nothing... https://suchanaughtymonkey.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/raminhiding.jpg
• JJ February 13, 2015

I wondered if we could trust naughty monkey. I didn't see any signs of traditional Monkeyshines out there today so those of you at work didn't miss too much.
• Giant Pacific Octopus February 13, 2015

The octopus people have been waiting on tenterhooks (tentercle-hooks?) to follow Ms. Monkey's lead--but keeping eight hands idle is difficult... the cephalopods may go on the march sooner, rather than later.
• JJ February 13, 2015

I don't think I'm familiar with the octopus people. Care to elaborate on how you plan to follow Ms. Monkey? (It's ok if you don't, I'm just curious.)
• mama&cubs; February 13, 2015

I've been wondering that too. I would love more info!
• Brenda February 13, 2015

I'm thinking (hoping!) they are referring to those octopus marbles that were found last year.
• Giant Pacific Octopus February 13, 2015

We have no affiliation, and no plans to follow the monkeys around (we hear that'll get you pelted with... ahem). We're just eager to appear, and hoping that the lovely monkeys take the lead.
• MA Piper February 18, 2015

Thank you! I just found a really cool glass orb with a blue octopus wrapped around it on my way to work! Love it! Regards, Matt Piper
• naughtymonkey February 13, 2015

The Naughty Monkey is not part of the project? The Naughty Monkey is making things up ? Things are not going out early/in stages/will go out on the usual night? You people are hilarious! The Naughty Monkey has always given you truth (unlike Ms Monkey who she has to escape from to provide this information) My favorite comment? The Naught Monkey is an Asshole… Whey YES. I AM an asshole! And I’m an asshole with the glass, pottery, fiber art, messages in bottles and the information. Go ahead… Ignore the Naughty Monkey and miss out. Oh, these did NOT go out tonight. Whatever you do, do NOT go out and look for them tomorrow. They won’t be there.

• T&N February 14, 2015

Was out last night did not find any glass or see others looking for it but I did leave some crystal clusters lying around. Where is everyone at?
• mama&cubs; February 14, 2015

We're just about to head out. Gotta drop the oldest off at work. I've never been stopped by the TPD, if there aren't other people out there we're gonna look weird. :)
• chyba February 14, 2015

We are heading out- hoping for a find.
• T&N February 14, 2015

Back at again this morning. There are lots of marbles around the pagoda at point d park.
• The Hunter February 14, 2015

No Monkeyshine, but found this lovely treasure!
• J & M February 14, 2015

I was wondering if they were going to time it with the Asian New Year celebration happening today, but the News Tribune makes it sound like it will be coming up next week. It's hard this year since it officially falls on a Thursday. We're planning to go out Friday. I'm not allowed to go out without my hunting partner so I must wait. The rumor that it's already started is killing me since my hunting partner has to work today!
• Momma Bear February 14, 2015

ive recently moved back home (here), and am just learning about this fun treasure hunt! I've been excited to take my son out and share all that this beautiful state has to offer, too! I'd love to get him out in an adventure that he will really dig, but can anyone give me an idea of some good locations? It sounds like point defiance is a good place??
• JJ February 14, 2015

If you can afford it (sign up for Amazon Local notifications because sometimes there are reduced rates) going on a whale watching trip is an experience he won't forget. Orca Network (also an alert you can sign up for) posts sightings of whales. Lime Kiln park in the San Juans has a microphone that broadcasts whale sounds when they're near. In the last month two new baby orcas have been discovered which is a big deal since the local residents are endangered. Closer to home, renting kayaks is fun. Mt Rainier has a lot of good hikes. if outdoors stuff is your thing check out The Mountaineers - they have some family friendly events that would let you meet others. Mt St Helen's park is mind-boggling, so much devastation is still visible. Is this the kind of stuff you were thinking of? Any given weekend, especially in summer, there are local festivals and street parties, art fairs, etc.
• mama&cubs; February 14, 2015

Pt. Defiance is good and even if you find nothing these is so much to see and explore. Ruston way is great too. There is a path that goes behind Pt. Ruston where the birds drop shells to Crack them open and it's just beautiful. If you have the energy you could walk the whole thing all the way down to Chinese Reconciliation Park on the other end. Also the water front along the Foss water way by the museum of glass.

• Mawmaw February 14, 2015

just wanted to say while I've never found a Monkeyshine, I love them! one year when we swere starting out as a family, I ran across the article about Monkeyshines, my husband daughter and I all jumped in the car and went out exploring. we never found one, but my daughter still remembers it and we had fun getting out of the house!
• Happy D February 14, 2015

Having fun walking all over, checking the blog and basically being consumed with the hunt and joy of being outdoors in the sun. Found a marble down on Foss waterway yesterday. Thanks Tacoma I love this town.
• Terie February 14, 2015

I started looking for the beautiful sparkly gifts (nick named "shiney monkeys" by my daughter) that the hardworking monkeys leave ever since your very first year. I have only found one beautiful orb, but continue to enjoy every year of searching. I am so grateful for the wonderful community activity that brings so many together once a year. I am continuing to explore how I/we can continue to enjoy and support this wondrous event after this year. I am hoping we can start some kind of grassroots effort. But if any of you have enjoyed this event by participating or discovering, lets make the small effort in comparison to the monkeys in showing our appreciation and respect for the art and joy they bring.

Took a lovely walk this morning with the pup. We placed some more crystal clusters out there and saw some marbles. Pointed a man in the direction of a marble so his son could find it. Sounded like he won the lottery as I walked away. Marble Man, you made that kids day. I tip my hat to you sir.
• naughtymonkey February 15, 2015

Are you Monkeyshines obsessed? http://www.roxannecooke.com/10-signs-you-are-monkeyshines-obsessed
• Happy D February 15, 2015

Yes yes yes I'm soooo obsessed, my family wants food and groceries but there is no time it's hunting season the possibility of beautiful shiny things are out, my feet are blistered from walking miles everyday, going to diffrent locations, checking around planters, rocks, corners, everywhere. Oh this year it's the worst it's ever been. The hints the teasing by naughty monkeys only makes me more giddy and addes to the joy of monkeyshines season!
• Slo Jo February 15, 2015

Please keep this going for at least another twelve years! My family is enjoying this so much, and it's just so wonderful how you entice people to spend time outdoors in our lovely town.
• Rookieshines February 15, 2015

Thank you Marble Man for making our little Monkeyshiner-in-training so very happy. Your generosity is most appreciated!! She is already talking about ways to pay it forward...the spirit of Monkeyshines grows thanks to people like you.
• dr.kay February 15, 2015

The smile on all the kids faces says so much! It is indeed the giving and the giving back, 'paying forward'. Everyone's generosity in giving is awesome! shells, octopi, marbles, crystals, lady bugs, etc. Just awesome!! Tacoma rocks! Look what you started Ms. Monkey! You're the best! I think we should all vote on having a park named after you. Sounds good doesn't it? Ms Monkey Park. :-) after 12 years of giving.. yeah.
• mo February 15, 2015

found some marbles today down near thea's park and spotted some on proctor as well...woohoo, it has begun! husband and i are going to be on high alert the next few days--still haven't had the pleasure of finding medallions or floats yet, but this year is our year...can't wait to go out hunting together!

Decided to go out with both daughters later this afternoon and each one found a marble! Thank you Marble Man, Monkeyshines artists, & A Naughty Monkey for the entertainment :) looking forward to the Monkeyshine hunt!

My son's first year of Monkeyshining and we went out this morning. He was excited but the true spirit of the event was stated by this 7 yr old after 45 mins. of searching, "Dad, I don't care if we find anything. I'm having so much fun exploring!" About 10 mins. later, as karma would have it, a gentleman and his pup tipped us off to a marble. He was ecstatic! Thank you T&N, Marbleman, and Monkeyshines!
• T & N February 16, 2015

Was out again this morning enjoying our town and dropping off more treasures. I came across a poor little 12th man ram trapped in a salmon's mouth. I rescued him from his unfortunate predicament. Thanks 12th man sisters

Great article about monkeyshines and Ms. Monkey in the trib. Ms. Monkey, this is our fourth year, and we say a very heartfelt THANK YOU!! My oldest (now 10 and the owner/finder of our first monkeyshine) looks forward to this every year, to the point of sleeping in his clothing as to not lose any searching time. We've had a great time so far. http://www.thenewstribune.com/2015/02/15/3640616_monkeyshines-ms-monkey-tells-story.html?rh=1 To the 12th Man Sisters, we haven't seen your stuff yet, but THANK YOU! To the Giant Pacific Octopus, THANK YOU! it was a special surprise to find it, and even more special to find it glowed in the dark that night, the Marble Man, you've really outdone yourself this year, THANK YOU! And to all the people out there who smile and take a moment to say "Hi" during the hunt, THANK YOU!

Spent a couple of hours out and about this morning. Fun wandering around town. Saw two different groups of people searching, spoke with one group. No luck in terms of actual monkeyshines, but was nice to watch the beautiful sunrise this morning and stretch out the legs before clocking in at work. May have to whip something fun up at work and leave some treasure behind for future seekers....

• Runner Mom February 16, 2015

Great runs and walks over the last few days.... no Monkeyshines, marbles, or other official finds. BUT did find an empty bird nest, a stone suitcase (UWT), and Chinese stone lions! Love Tacoma and love Monkeyshines!
• 12th Man Sisters February 16, 2015

12th Man Sisters are apparently not fence menders because more of our 12th man sheep have got loose, they are rooming around Tacoma enjoying the sun! From boat rides, hanging with fishes and finding new friends they sure are getting around Tacoma!!! They are roaming free all around this beautiful city of ours!!!
• Momma Bear February 16, 2015

I can't believe how much my 9 year old son loves this! Like someone above said, he made the comment that he doesn't care if he finds anything! He's really gotten into the spirit of the hunt, without getting competitive. Thanks to all who have contributed! This past weekend has been one of the best we've had in awhile! So much so, that we've decided to go out every weekend and explore! You all really have a cool thing going here, and the sense of family and community is contagious!
• Treasure Hunting Grandma February 16, 2015

Went out today and looked high and low.. Didn't find anything, but enjoyed the search.. My husband went out reluctantly and admitted to enjoying himself.. Was such a beautiful day and will be going out again later this week.. I love hearing the stories of everyone that participates, whether they find something or not.. Everyone needs a good adventure. So fun.
• shelby m February 16, 2015

am I mistaken in that people are just supposed to take 1 monkeyshine, marble, etc?
• naughtymonkey February 16, 2015

Take only one, or risk monkey wrath. Worse than that, take more than one and risk the wrath of thousands of monkeyshine hunters who are playing by the rules.
• Peter Peter February 17, 2015

The rules seem strictest (even if self-imposed) with the official monkeyshine balls and medallions. I've found a ball in the past and kept looking. If I found another one that was more interesting to me, I'd swap it out and leave the previous one. Only take one in the end. Since marbles are going out now I believe they count separately. If you find a marble this week and a monkeyshine next week, I don't think anyone is expecting you to return the marble. It'd be great if you did, but the wrath of scorned monkeys probably won't come down on you.
• Runner Mom February 16, 2015

Hello! Is it too late to donate? And when/where would we get our donation gift? -Emily
• betheadventure February 17, 2015

it's not :) Hoping to pay today (basically waiting on tax return to magically appear). I think you can also donate directly if you can't afford the cup. I'm sure any bit helps. /articles/view/a-very-special-monkeyshines-opportunity
• T & N February 17, 2015

Took another walk this morning with the pup. I'm starting to see more hunters out there. Left some chunks of thunder eggs lying around. There was no glass out there, but I did see a sleeping angel in a bowl. I decided not to disturb her and move on. My favorite part about walking around in the morning is how peaceful it is and couldn't ask for better February weather.
• Andrew February 17, 2015

Went out looking this morning and found more Tacoma! It's a good day. Shine on!
• Eamonn February 17, 2015

Had a nice walk on a beautiful February morning. Found some very pretty marbles in Wright Park. Left them behind in hopes of making a younger hunter's day. Good luck and have fun out there!
• Derek staff February 17, 2015

Several people have asked if it would be possible for us to notify them when Monkeyshines officially starts. The short answer is, no. We will not personally do that. However, here's a tip that may help. 1) Register on Exit133 if you haven't already done that, then 2) once registered and signed in, at the bottom of the comments is a link to "Subscribe to comment notification ..." This should send you an email with every new comment and will be the fastest way to know when things get really exciting around here. Good luck and happy hunting.
• Michelle February 17, 2015

I tried registering last week but didn't get the authentication email... Anyone else have this problem?
• Derek staff February 17, 2015

Michelle - I've activated your account. Emails are working right now, but some email services just never seem to receive them. It's a known issue.
• T February 18, 2015

I haven't received my activation email either. Could you activate my account too?
• Derek staff February 18, 2015

You're activated now.
• beachmama February 18, 2015

I've been waiting for my activation too. No luck yet. Derek can you help?
• Derek staff February 18, 2015

You're fixed now.
• Derek staff February 18, 2015

Just so folks know - notifications are only working for some people. We'll just have to go back to the old method of hitting REFRESH over and over again ...
• Monkey Seekers February 18, 2015

I got the e-mail, but when I click on the URL it gives me an error code that says "invalid activation request". Can you help with this?
• 12th Man Sister's February 17, 2015

While out checking on the heard spotted a silly ram hanging with a friend trying shake shake shake!!
• Generous Monkey February 17, 2015

Generous monkey is starting to feel a bit, well generous. But then again I am a monkey at heart, and love shenanigans. So very conflicted. I'll start with one, and just one. Not a ball. Not a medallion. Not a marble. Not a ladybug. Not a 12's sisters. Though I do love all of the before mentioned things. Something new for the year. Something Sparkly. Something to be treasured all the same.
• Oma#7 February 17, 2015

Generous Monkey---you are one bad tease. This old granny is going to compete with you swift good sighted youngn's.
• Generous Monkey February 17, 2015

Oops. Did I say 1? There goes another! Must be feeling extra generous right now
• Brenda February 17, 2015

As a fourth year monkey searcher, I couldn't go on another year of hunting without giving a little something back - I've left 6 itty bitty monkeys around Tacoma in the past three days. I hope they find smiling faces and warm homes! Happy searching (and sharing) all!
• Giant Pacific Octopus February 17, 2015

There are a few more tentacled orphans waiting out there in the city... and many more to come.
• The Hunter February 17, 2015

I can't wait! Great family event!! This is huge for Ms. Monkey and the Tacoma art commission. Thank you very much for all you do!! I really like my candle holder too!!
• marbleman February 17, 2015

Hi all, I heard that those that have found one of the jars of marbles were kind enough to only take one and leave the rest and the jar. IF you find a jar of marbles, the entire jar is yours to take... there's more to go out... many more. :-) Shine on.... Marbleman
• jj February 17, 2015

Hi Marbleman! Thank you. I'm one who left the jar because I wanted someone else to have the fun of finding it. Over the last two years I've found over 30 of your marbles. I've kept a couple, and took photos of most of the rest - sort of a marble photo safari. They look pretty big and cool close up in their "natural" surroundings. Thanks for all the fun!
• Runner Mom February 17, 2015

Sometimes runners leave treasures behind when they run ...
• JNL MOM February 19, 2015

My daughter found the top disk in this photo. Thank you to Runner Mom for leaving these behind on your run. No orb or medallion yet, but the fun is in the search and this disk made our hearts leap just as much as something from Ms Monkey. Thank you, it's beautiful.
• DMurphy February 17, 2015

I think I found one!! Located at Wrights Park with the lovely greetings inside...our family is loving it! Happy Hunting to everyone!

I'm so glad to see that someone found my message in a bottle (in my best Police voice). I guess that means I need to go hide some more. Generous Monkey loves to read...
• T & A February 17, 2015

Watched it get pulled from his arm as I pulled up. It was soooo shiny! Made me happy just to catch a glimpse of one in the wild.
• Laura February 18, 2015

I've heard that particular sparkly bottle may have been re-hidden elsewhere in Tacoma. Perhaps in a park dedicated to some of our first responders... Happy Hunting!

• Laura February 18, 2015

We were lucky enough to find a message in a bottle from Generous Monkey this evening. So fun! We added our own comments to the "Tacoma Is..." note and hid it again for someone else to find. Love Monkeyshines!
• 12th Man Sisters February 18, 2015

Remember to only take one. Although we won't fling poo, we will move the herd.
• JWILL February 18, 2015

I've been out since 3:30 and did not have any luck. I did meet a few nice hunters and one not so nice police officer.
• T & N February 18, 2015

Was out again this morning. Looked at fireman's park, found some glass. But alas, it was a crack pipe. LoL! Also found a bum. Good times in Tacoma! Be careful out there and have fun.

He's spending the night recovering from his day at middle school (and a bit of a repair), then will be set free to surprise another tomorrow. Thanks 12th man sisters!
• Generous Monkey February 18, 2015

Generous monkey is loving all the love and generosity out in Tacoma right now. Generous Monkey loves to see people passing their good fortune forward by rehiding things (even though you don't have to) and all those leaving their own treasures behind, even beyond our known headliners (marbleman, 12 sisters, ladybug lady, etc.) we love to see our community, our people, and our glorious city uniting. Generous monkey has left some more sparkly treasures behind after seeing so many acts of kindness and paying it forward. Generous monkey also loves the environent. Lets keep Tacoma beautiful. Pack an extra bag and if that shiny object you go after is really a red bull can, pick it up and put it in the recycling etc. Keeping our city sparkling is a treasure in itself. And if I see you out helping keep Tacoma beautiful while hunting, it might spur me to be even MORE generous....
• Treasure hunting Grandma February 18, 2015

I love that idea of cleaning up as you go around on the Hunt.. I will do that for sure.. I have really enjoyed the hunt this year and I really don't want this to be the last year.. My Grandkids really enjoy being a part of this tradition. We have yet to find anything, but the sense of adventure just adds a sparkle to their eyes and it melts my heart. Thank you to all involved in this..
• Spindock February 18, 2015

I agree with Treasure hunting Grandma. I had a really fun time with my friends looking around all over Tacoma. We didn't find anything but we did our civic duty and picked up some trash in Wrights Park tonight.
• Dog Walker February 18, 2015

Had a great walk with the dogs tonight, and I am thrilled to share that I was able to save a 12th man Ram; he was about to be swallowed by the giant fish in Proctor. It was a close one! ;) Thanks 12th Man Sisters for making my night! Happy hunting everyone!
• 12th Man Sister's February 18, 2015

Good save, those silly little rams get themselves caught in the craziest places!

• Steph and crew February 19, 2015

• Yojpoj February 19, 2015

Stephanie, no awkwardness, you looked great. Way to represent Tacoma!
• Steph and crew February 20, 2015

Yojpoj I just saw this reply! You friend are very kind, thank you. Thinking back to that interview there is so much I wish I would have said to better represent Tacoma, sadly, my nerves got the best of me. The biggest should have been a big HUGE THANK YOU to Ms Monkey and everyone else who works so hard to make this happen!!! Also just the sense of community it brings to all who hunt, its great to talk to so many encouraging people. I'm extremely ecstatic that I finally have one to call my own, even more so that this is possibly the last year. (I hope not) thanks again and good luck to all!
• Danielle February 19, 2015

Congratulations! I think my girlfriend and I saw you and your friend up by the conservatory this morning. You let us take a look at your beautiful orb. Gives me hope to find one for my son. Congrats again.
• Steph and crew February 19, 2015

Thanks again Danielle! It was nice to run into you two, thanks for being so nice. Fingers crossed for you and your son that you find one also!
• JNat February 19, 2015

My favorite story yet and it doesn't even involve me getting one. I typically walk my dog every morning about 5am at UPS. However, our teething 10 month old has not been allowing any sleep in our house and I slept in a bit today. Thought I'd quickly drive by the fountain though on my way to the bus station. As I drive up there's a woman standing on top of the bench by the fountain, phone in hand, obviously found one. I was so disappointed to be beaten to the punch at my usual spot and drove off. About 30 seconds later I get a text from my friend who says "I am at the UPS fountain and I think there may be one at the top but I don't know how to get up there!" It was her texting me when I drove by and she didn't even see me. I circled back and helped hoist her up to grab the most beautiful blue and green orb. And to top it off, her husband just received a real bad health diagnosis...so they need all the good luck they can get. So much happier for her to have it than me. May the Year of the Ram be excellent to them! And thanks Ms Monkey and crew, you're amazing and make Tacoma beautiful.
• AndreaW February 19, 2015

I checked the fountain an hour before. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be the early bird. I am so happy your friend was the lucky one instead!
• Yojpoj February 19, 2015

A UPS staff member found another float in the fountain, I think later, so things definitely didn't hit town all at once!
• The Hunter February 19, 2015

I found a beautiful globe on sprague this morning when airing up a tire of all things! I love it!!
• J & M February 19, 2015

• Emily and Holly Arden February 21, 2015

Coach Tom. How about hooking up your FAVORITE soccer player...other than Genet, of course! We've been looking for 6 years now. Just a hint?

The hunting was good in the hilltop Mimi parks this morning!
• dustin February 19, 2015

I think I talked to you this morning right at firemans park. You two walked away and I did too. That rain gutter right in front of the pho place had a float hidden within the plants. I turned around to see a car pull up, someone jump out, grab it, everyone cheer and drive off. Grrrrr, we were so close. I'm glad you two finally found one. I did too along thea foss way, wooooo!

• kkdb February 19, 2015

Found mine on downtown Tacoma :) Thank you every one for your amazing generosity and the willingness to share your amazing talents with us, we're forever grateful for our gifts.
• Poppyseed February 19, 2015

On my first hunt and in the 11th hour (before needing to get ready for work) my neighbor and I swung by Neighbors Park. I found the most beautiful glass orb! One last stop at Ferry Park and my neighbor found a beautiful glass gift from the monkeys there! What a great way to start the morning- out and about exploring our beautiful city. :)
• Zoey February 19, 2015

• Broken boy February 19, 2015

To the lady at kandle park that took all the orbs, and yes we saw you fill your bag!!!! I just want to say you just broke my sons heart! We have searched numerous years and never found one till today. I guess we will wait another year and hope the monkeys do it more years to come!
• Generous Monkey February 19, 2015

@broken boy, that makes Generous Monkey so very sad :( Will you continue out on your search today?
To the lady at kandle park that took all the orbs, and yes we saw you fill your bag!!!! I will be searching more today, but don't know where else to look.
• Ms. Monkey February 19, 2015

Don't let one bad apple spoil your hunt. The treasure is Tacoma, the hunt a good time to spend with those you love. A monkeyshine, a bonus. Keep looking...they are lots out there! • sean February 19, 2015

I found an orb at Kandle Park around 1:15 this afternoon. Apparently, she didn't get all of them so it may be worth a trip back. I found mine in about ten minutes of looking and there was a lot of park left to explore when I left with my one orb.
• sean February 19, 2015

This is so sad but she didn't get them all. I found an orb there (prior to reading this - otherwise I might have looked elsewhere) about 1:15 this afternoon.
• Serenity February 19, 2015

After three years of looking my kids finally found a beautiful orb! We may have done a rather loud happy dance when we found it but no one around us seemed to mind! Thank you generous artists of Tacoma for a morning which allowed us to see the sunrise and bring home treasure.
• Interrobang February 19, 2015

Searched many parks this morning and sadly no luck with finding an orb. Maybe next year!(please be a next year!) Thanks to everyone posting their orbs so we can all admire the art. Also, thanks to the monkeyshiners for such a beautifully Tacoma tradition!
• Suki February 19, 2015

Check star center park and manitou park and found nothing. 35 wks pregnant and hunting is a lot of energy. Hopefully it pays off with me finding something. I would really like to have something for good luck when I have my baby girl in march.
• Eileenms February 19, 2015

Found three bottles this am! Left two and will re-hide one tonight when we go back out searching for the elusive orb.
• Ms. Monkey February 19, 2015

Thanks Tacoma for playing with us. I spied many hunters out this morning. There are over 3000 items being put out this year, lots I haven't seen posted yet, so don't give up. And remember, we all have the ability to positively impact each other, what will you do?
• Nina February 19, 2015

After four hours of searching I was getting ready to call it quits when I found my very first orb (a beautiful green one) , along with a ceramic ram cup, at one of my favorite gardens in Pt. Defiance Park. I had to do a little climbing to get to it but I wasn't going to let that stop me. Thank you so much for the treasure and the fun hunt!
• Super Fairies February 19, 2015

We found a nice piece of pottery this morning at wright park and a marble yesterday at the Tacoma Nature Center. No orbs yet. Won't give up yet. Happy Hunting!

Out with the whole family. 3 of us found orbs(in a tree, at a bus stop, McKinnley Park). My son found a jar of marbles at Thea Foss Park. He was so excited. Also found a message in a bottle with $! I have hidden 50 glass ladybugs so good luck to those who find them. Cant figure out how to post pictures. Can anyone tell me??

I searched through some parks in the West End this morning, but didn't find anything. I have lived in Tacoma since 2007 and I love walking in this city, but this is the first year I have heard of monkeyshines. I hope the tradition continues, but even if it doesn't, I will treasure the time I spent before work this morning, walking the dogs, and thinking of all the people out there on their own treasure hunts. I felt like a Goonie. Thank you Ms. Monkey and everyone that made this possible, and thank you Tacoma.
• Peter Peter February 19, 2015

I've had very good luck hunting Monkeyshines in the West End over the years - sometimes days later. Don't tell anyone ... and good luck with your hunt.

My ten year old just found this same monkey shine (or one almost exactly like it) on top of the plaque describing the statue outside of lowel elementary. An exciting july 1 find (2016) for an expat Canadian.

We searched from 4:45 to 7ish this morning. We had great luck! All 6 of us found something. We searched Wright Park, Stadium, Opera Alley and some of the surrounding blocks. Thank you to all of the Monkeys! What an amazing contribution you make to our city every year. :)

I searched all morning with my best friends and it was one of the best times I've had in the last year since I moved to Tacoma! Thank you Monkeys, for making Tacoma such a magical place, and for helping me get to know my city and fellow Tacomans so much better! It was so fun to see everyone out searching and helping each other. I'd love to see this tradition continue on into the coming years!

Had so much fun on our hunt this morning. Went out early with our flashlights to Wright Park and after just a half hour, we started finding things.. Found a beautiful and colorful orb in a tree and a ceramic cup with a Ram on it.. My husband found another orb we will be giving to our daughter, who is an avid hunter, but unable to make it due to a death in her family.. She was so excited when we told her.. Thank you, Thank you Thank you to all who make this such a fun adventure for families.. Really hoping this isn't the last year..

I am not a Tacoma resident, but there is a part of my heart that is always there. Some of the people closest to me live there and thus have opened my eyes to what a great community and place it is. They invited me to go on an adventure this morning and it was amazing! Ms. Monkey and her crew did not disappoint! We had so much fun and added yet another "Tacoma memory" to my book. Thank you for all your hard work and effort!
• ShineOn February 19, 2015

So awesome you found one for yourself! It was great chatting quickly with you and your mom. My son had to go to school but I had a hunch there was more to be found and went out again searching. I got lucky at one of my favorite Lincoln District eateries! Nice to meet a neighbor too :)
• Halley February 19, 2015

It was so funny - right after we left you and I was like "Okay, time to quit, I have to go to work," we decided to walk around that weird shack in the parking lot on the way back to the car and there it was! We also found the ram bottle at the shack. So fun! And so glad you got lucky as well. Happy new year!

• Eager Beaver February 19, 2015

Spending parts of my Mid winter break and waking up early at 4 am this morning to go looking for Monkeyshines with my family was something I never would've thought I'd enjoy as much. I've been looking at all sorts of parks with the luck of a marble but seeing others find those cool orbs and other fun prizes, I will not give up until I find one!!! I wanted to know if anyone has any idea how far the monkeys have went distribution wise, I've checked Wapato park in the hopes of finding one but not sure if they go out that far... I also don't know if this rain will discourage people from looking! I know I still am! Please let me know! Good luck in all your searches! xxx

I've been up at 4am everyday this week in hopes of getting one this year. This morning seemed dead and I almost resorted to finding a cozy spot and taking a nap before work. Then the tweets and posts started to roll in and around every corner, I would see someone pull one out of a fountain or a rain gutter along Pacific. I was racing around and thinking of all the places people had found them in prior years, hoping I would be in front of someone else to claim one for my own. It just wasn't happening. I tried one last spot I had already been to several times this morning, still, no dice. I decided I needed a donut at dockside on Puyallup Ave and started my way there. I tried one little park that I found a couple of years ago while hunting, no dice. Then tried the little spot under the bridge on thea foss that has two benches. As I was driving up, I thought I saw one. YES!!!! Finally. My very own Iced Monkeyshine!!! Took a picture while walking up and another while holding it and then went and got a donut anyways! Thanks everyone. The girlfriend wants to try this weekend, so we might go explore some new parks I haven't been to before and see what happens.

• She Wore a Purple Hat February 19, 2015

I have been following the Monkeyshine fun for awhile, but this was our first time out looking. We met some very nice people and it was great chit chatting along the way. We started out on Broadway where we found a marble. Pocket treasure! We then headed to Reconciliation Park and found a message in a bottle with a poetic message inside. I want to thank Ms Monkey, her crew and other creative souls who collaborated with such an awesome project! It was a great morning regardless of serendipitous findings or not. It was nice to get out and meet people even if for a moment. After today's journey, I greatly understand this projects importance... I sincerely hope that this project continues.

I was out with some other new friends this year sharing the experience. And when we drove around a bit, decided to walk around for circulation. My group of 6. We each found something. Yeahhhhhh... Had to look hard this year. And pick up a bunch of trash. Can u believe how wet a couple of us got finding the balls.. Haha they were soaked and we were prepared from few years ago fountain climb. I think I saw 12th man sisters out hiding last night could not be for sure. Then a silver gold jeep was following us around slot so we left. Fishy....

Received via email: "Found this beauty in Ferry Park early this morning! I'm glad the monkeys know how great this tiny park is. Thanks, monkeys! This is such an amazing tradition. Wishing everyone good fortune in the new year and good luck with their treasure hunts!"
• Derek staff February 19, 2015

Received via email: "I just read the Monkeyshines post about the woman seen taking orbs from Kandle Park which is weird because I was there about an hour ago and found an orb. While I was there, I ran into a couple of nice Metro Parks guys and they mentioned that one of their coworkers had witnessed the woman taking the orbs this morning (but he apparently did not confront her). The good news is that, despite her selfishness, she was unsuccessful in taking them all as I found this one within about 10 minutes of looking. Hopefully, others will find them there too!"

• Suki February 19, 2015

Been a hunter for three year. Today after five parks and over 8 hrs of searching I finally found a beautiful clean with some yellow marble. I thank you Marbleman so much. I feel the good luck and in high hopes my baby girl will be born healthy and strong (I'm 35 weeks pregnant). My mother and I had to stop searching because my sister Kookie (nickname) had an appointment. So all that walking really is hurting me now but I hope to go out tomorrow and find more marbles or something else from the Monkeyshine, ms ladybug, 12sisters, or the octopus people. I really hope this is not the last year I would love for my daughter to grow up with this tradition. Its so much fun and a great way to bond with family and friends. :)

Any hints for those of us that had to work today? This is the first time in years that I haven't been out first thing in the morning, had to work all day unfortunately. Thanks to anyone who saw an extra after they already had theirs and wants to share a tip. :) <3 you Tacoma, as always.
• Giant Pacific Octopus February 19, 2015

Don't know about any other hiders, but we're placing ours at various times on various days. There should be good hunting through the weekend for those who had school or work this week. Good luck!
• Generous Monkey February 19, 2015

Generous Monkey will continue to put out and hide treasures throughout this week and weekend, and who knows maybe even weeks or months from now. Keep in mind the saying "it's not the destination it's the journey". In monkeyshine talk, that translates into "it's not about the treasure, it's about the hunt". May we all find treasure simply in the hunt, and each and every day in a community that we are so fortunate to have and with those we interact with. I read a post earlier about a gentleman that found one of the be kind tokens, and plans to pass it along with his own pay it forward type acts that he already does. I love that. May the season of monkeyshines inspire you beyond this week, beyond this weekend, and beyond your comfort zone to be kind today and every day. Be kind. And may you find a treasure, whatever it may be, serendipitously in the new year.
• Peaches February 21, 2015

We were out before dawn this morning, at Wapato Park, then downtown on Pacific, across the skybridge in the glass museum area, all around Wright Park, and along sixth. Didn't find a single Monkeyshines treasure, but *so* much else--the overnight rain made all of the grass and leaves at Wapato glow like silver faery dust, and the jonquils are just starting to bloom; we had the Chihuly glass bridge all to ourselves (along with a near-freezing wind!), and chatted with a couple of really nice folks in Wright Park. Neither had found anything, either, but one said other folks told her they'd found an orb and something else over by the fountain. Thanks for the opportunity to rejoice in the beauty and treasure that is Tacoma and connect with great people in such a positive way! We'll keep looking!
• Oma#7 February 19, 2015

Have walked our feet off---Pt Defiance, Star Memorial, Nature Park, China Lake Park, TCC, Exotic Plants,... nothing. But my doctor will be happy and the people and the nature were wonderful. Please tell me if this a one night drop????

• Roocifer February 19, 2015

I was getting in my car this morning to go to work. "What the **** is that on my windshield??? Did someone put a donut on my car? Seriously??" Nope. It was a super cool Be Kind Grant token. No harm done to the car AT ALL. To the sneaky deliverer: Thank you!!! What a fantastic way to start my morning. I loved the message, I loved it & wouldn't you know, I've never been able to find anything in all these years... I'm a big fan of random, anonymous kindnesses. So, while I would love to keep it, I can't wait to find an opportunity to do my next one & pass it on with it. Wouldn't it be awesome to have it be a tangible excuse for many other people as it passed hands? :)
• Armo February 19, 2015

Today was a great day! I was out with the huz this morning around 545 and we found a message in a bottle and the wonderful stamped ornament. I decided to go back out around 10am with the pup and we found a beautiful yellow orb at Kandle Park and a wiffle ball. Saw quite a few people there, but did not see the lady stealing all the orbs. Maybe she brought them back? Mine was located behind the fence by the pool and it was almost out or reach. Good luck to everyone still looking. Ps our message in the bottle is back out there somewhere!
• kkdb and Aw11ofthetac February 19, 2015

Any hints for those of us still searching? A particular area or hub to scavenger? My puppy is loving all our long walks! Thanks Tacoma!! <3
• Greatful mom February 19, 2015

I am both excited and frustrated today. I have been following this link for the last week and so eager to get out and look! But I am also a full time mom, part time employee and planning a road trip on Saturday. So as much as I have been burning to get out there and look, I have responsibilities that have kept me from much. But it has been so exciting to see your stories, here your victories, and enjoy the beauty in what you have found. Beautiful glass, and beautiful people. I can't believe I have lived in Tacoma for 12, years and never herd of this before!? Treasure hunting is a passion to say the least! And watching you has been inspirational. I tried south park today off STW, after sitting (begrudgingly) for an hour and a half waiting on my car to be tuned up. No luck, but my 3 1/2 year old got excited about "finding treasure!" And it was fun to see others walking around obviously searching for "something" special. I also drove by candle park after getting lunch, and heading to pick up my other two kids. Didn't get out as I didn't figure there was much left with all the people walking around. Maybe that was a mistake? I did stop by a small park in Proctor as well, went down the trail a bit, but didn't have much time. Didn't find any coveted glass, but I did find a geocach! :) So I have one more morning, after dropping my older two at school, to spend a few brief moments with my little one looking. I don't hold high hopes, (I'm supposed to be packing for our trip) But it will be fun to poke around before I have to head off to work. I'm thinking of going back to the Ruston waterfront where I looked a few days ago. I must say I'm quite fond of those octopi as well and know my daughter would LOVE them! So a BIG thank you!! To all who have put this treasure hunt together, and everyone who has been so amazing finding, sharing, and having such a great time. I truly hope the tradition continues. If so, next year you can bet I'll be out, bright and early, with all three kids in tow, to take part in this amazing treasure hunt. Good luck everyone! Please continue to share your finds and wonderful stories so I can continue to live vicariously through you all!! :)
• Suki February 19, 2015

So didn't go back out hopefully my sister and I can go out together tomorrow. She couldn't go with me because she got her tooth pulled and she in pain. Hope we get lucky tomorrow. Good luck hunters
• Greatful Mom February 19, 2015

Ha, ha, so in my super long comment, I totally forgot the best part!! As we were looking I was telling my daughter (3 1/2) about the monkeys that hid the glass for people to find. She was very excited about this and was asking my all about them and how they did it! "were they swinging by their tails? Were they nice monkeys?" "What are the monkeys names?" It was a blast! I really hope this is a tradition we can continue for many years to come. Its better then the tooth fairy or Easter egg hunts!! Ha Ha, Thanks Monkeys!! And everyone else who hides these treasures! :) Oh, and she thinks one of the monkeys MUST be named bellybutton.. lol
• Generous Monkey February 19, 2015

Please tell your daughter that the Generous Monkey says hello!
• Greatful mom February 20, 2015

I did thank you! :) She giggled :)
• dustin February 19, 2015

Speaking of, I would love to have seen them do this. I was searching Wright Park this morning and thinking about all the people I had seen this morning searching and was like, I don't get it. It's going to be impossible for any of them to get hidden at this point, especially now. Then I got all conspiracy theorist and made this quick meme to send to a friend who was also searching, lol... Ninja Monkeys!

• Claudia February 19, 2015

I missed looking for monkeyshines today :( hope I am able to go out hunting tomorrow and find a treasure. I am new to hunting any tips for looking? I also tried to register but didn't receive the confirmation email yet.
• dustin February 19, 2015

Hey Claudia! It's never too late. I found my first one last year (though I remember searching the first year, thanks to a hider cluing me in to the hunt). But the fun thing about my find last year was that it was actually one from a prior year. So the fun never really ends unless you want it to. It just gets harder once the majority of them are found. So if you want to start, I'd say as soon as you read these tips, you should go, now, don't wait! All these tips are based on my own opinions and from what I've observed, proceed with some caution and don't get too bummed when you leave empty handed because most of us have gone home without a monkeyshine, but it isn't only about the treasure. Isn't there a quote about it not being about the destination, but about the journey. Just keep that in mind. Anyways. They like to be hidden near water or in it (fountains, the sound, etc). They seem to like bamboo or near Chinese type places. Try the international district. They also seem to like parks, they might even love being in parks. You can scroll through this page and see where people are finding them. Neither of my finds were in parks. One was in a planter (a common hidey spot) and another was on a bench (not likely at this point). They're also not limited to just downtown either. Titlow got some last year if I remember right, Point Defiance and I think a few made it to Browns Point last year. So if you have the time and want to see some things you may have never seen (so many cool tiny parks in Tacoma), then get out a map and start looking around. Look high, look low. Have fun, say hi to strangers and keep in mind that the treasure is a bonus. A super fun bonus that you can look at later and tell stories about when people ask what the cool piece of glass is. Sorry, that was long winded. Go out and have fun!

Hi Dustin I am Claudia I registered and have a different screen name but I thank you so much for all the great tips and yes you are so right it is about the adventure and the people like yourself that I will meet or have contact with either face to face or just through a message of encouragement along the way. It is the sense of community and comradery that has me joining the fun and if I am lucky in the end to find a shiny treasure then that is just icing on the cake :) Max and I will be out hunting and exploring this great city of ours so if you happen to be out and see someone with a fuzzy little dog it just may be. Good luck in your hunts and thank you again for your tips!
• max~n~me February 19, 2015

Good evening all missed going out hunting today hoping to go out tomorrow with my dog Max it is great to see all the posts and the treasures people have found. I am new to this and would appreciate any tips I love the happiness and community these treasures bring and hope that Ms. Monkey isn't finished with this great tradition from what I have heard it brings a lot of joy and smiles to kids and adults alike. :) Happy hunting all!
• That Tacoma Girl February 19, 2015

max-n-me we had pretty good luck in Wright park tonight, I would suggest that as starter. My daughter found her first Monkeyshines treat, it was a cool message in the bottle. (Thank you to the couple who helped point her in the right direction). Lots of shiny little treats still lurking about....
• max~n~me February 19, 2015

Thanks Tacoma Girl will take my dog Max and go hunting even if I don't find anything I will still love the hunt and am very grateful to all the wonderful people who take the time and their artistic skills to make this happen cheers to all of you! I am glad your daughter found her first Monkeyshines that is fantastic!!!
• Sneaky monkeys February 21, 2015

:) We were happy to help. It was great to hear her yelling she found one. I have to ask, what did it say? It is driving us bananas!
• DewBigs February 19, 2015

Found this lovely treasure at the Co-Op early this morning on my way to work. While walking down 6th Ave. with my bounty in hand I spotted a blue bottle and another medallion sitting on a bench, both which I left for another lucky seeker. Thank you so much to all of the organizations and individuals who make this happen for us!
• Kim February 19, 2015

first time out today and found a colourful orb after 5 seconds outside Silk Thai courtyard on 6th! I've caught the monkeyshine fever! Love the glass and the people behind this city tradition. Beginners luck? Happy Chinese New Year
• J & M February 19, 2015

My tip would be to enjoy the community, take joy in the search, and read through this year's post and, especially, last year's posts. Have fun!!
• KW February 19, 2015

I see postings about people registering... What are we registering in for? how do you register?
• Ms.Ladybug February 19, 2015

Well I must say after hunting all 12 yes w 4 generations of my family I think this yr may have been the best. We have every piece except for the horse. I haven't given up lol. This is a family tradition and I would hate to see it go. My son was 4 when we started and is now 16! He even got to help make them one yr. This was our first yr hiding and it was just as fun. I got to watch this Lil red he'd boy grab my glass ladybug from the fishes mouth on Proctor and then his brother found one in a flower bed. The look on their Lil faces was priceless and worth the whole adventure! What really gave me a energy boost was meeting 2 women At Jefferson Park who said they found a medallion in a tree...wait for it...it had a snake on it! I told her that was 2 yes ago!!! Awesome! U just never know what you will find.
• Super Fairies February 19, 2015

Tonight we walked our feet off in McKinley Park. I had no idea that it was so big and we took the down hill all the way option rather than the reverse. I am so glad we did not do the reverse. So, to get to the point, no we did not find any orbs but did find a cute porcelain statue of a girl bear and a nice marble. I don't know it the statue had anything to do with what was being hidden but it is now found and will have a treasured place in our home. Thanks for the memories!
• Puyallupmomma February 19, 2015

Yay! My favorite Phoarchithor found one!
• Xeno February 20, 2015

The early bird certainly gets the worm. I don't know why I just don't wake up early but I did walk 16 miles and burn over 5,000 calories so here's to your health. Found a jar of marbles from marbleman, but still salivating over trying to get an orb. If anyone wants to trade let me know :)
• Eager Beaver February 20, 2015

Anyone out hunting this early? Wright park seems to be dead! ;( thought maybe the monkeys would wanna suprise early Friday morning risers.
• KesslerMama February 20, 2015

I'm heading out now... I'm hoping the monkeys aren't completely worn out from yesterday and want to have some fun this morning too!! Good luck hunting!
• Eager Beaver February 20, 2015

Yeah, lots of people were finding and looking at wright park at this time, yesterday. Good luck in your hunting too!
• KesslerMama February 20, 2015

I struck out at Proctor, Kandle Park, Jane Clark Park, Stevens round-about, Puget Park and Old Town. Any success?
• Eager Beaver February 20, 2015

Looked for hours yesterday and looked through mckinley, Ruston way, downtown tacoma, world park and some other little inconspicuous tacoma areas with only luck at wright park at about 5 am. And this morning looked by the glass museum and wright park, haven't checked since about 7 this morning and haven't seen too many more posts of people finding them so /:
• EarlyBirdnoWorn February 20, 2015

I was so excited last night I couldn't sleep. Like a kid on Christmas. By 4am I was on 6th ave. I then tried Jefferson park and Proctor with no luck. I spent 5 hours yesterday, and as I prepare to go start my 12 hour shift it was hard not to feel disappointed. But knowing I left a treasure behind helps. Good luck everyone.
• SleepyPanda February 20, 2015

We were out in Wright Park and 6th Ave in the dead of the night from about 2-430a...afraid we had naught much luck, except our very first marble that was perched in a tree which was quite fantastic! Monkeys need their sleep too it seems. Hopefully you later-early risers will have better luck!
• Derek staff February 20, 2015

We are a little behind getting all the images up that folks are sending us via email. We'll catch up here ... eventually.
• marbleman February 20, 2015

Congrats Ms Monkey and team! your talent and giving is unsurpassed. Saw 'Shiny Happy People' everywhere with works of art in their hands. Every one I met was SSSOOOO nice. I saw lots of undiscovered treasures still in place. You have brought our city together with not only your selflessness, but have brought out random acts of kindness in others. The sharing and caring of all the others that have given back and paid forward is incredible. And thanks to the 'Marble Lady' that has put up with me for over 38 years, and her help, and all the other marble elves that have helped too! And yes, in case you were wondering, I have totally lost my marbles, and lovin it. ~Marbleman.
• Happy D February 20, 2015

Thank you marbleman we have a found a few of your marbles thru-out the years we so enjoy your kindness. Thanks so much!
• Happy D February 20, 2015

I've had sooo much fun these last few weeks. Out walking around Tacoma. Seeing others out more than ever. I've seen beautiful sunrises. Spent time with my 13 year old son both of us geting up early and searching. We've had great conversations and I've enjoyed that the most. If anyone has a teenager you know valuable that is. We've been very fortunate in our searches finding a marble and a geode. He found a teacup yesterday and I found the most beautiful large yellow orb yesterday. I've literally walked a marathon logging over 26 miles this last week. I've lost lost weight in the process. Bonus! But enough about me, what this does for Tacoma I think is wonderful. The families in my preschool class get so excited about this cool quirky thing that happens in the middle of winter. The families out and about in the middle of winter having fun is great. The friendly people we meet out around town with hope and joy is contagious. The sharing and caring for others that people have shown is inspiring. The whole sense of community that this project brings is why I love Tacoma! Thank you so much for the joy you've brought to our city Monkeyshines you are awesome!
• Dog Walker February 20, 2015

Having so much fun out hunting and exploring!!! Found my first beautiful orb this morning. I love this tradition and hope that it continues for many years to come! Such great memories made out exploring the beauty of Tacoma!!
• EarlyBirdnoWorm February 20, 2015

Where were you and your pup? I was out 4-5a with no luck but am returning to the hunt with my furry friend!
• Dog Walker February 20, 2015

Found it in the bushes in front of Tacoma Little Theater
• Michelle February 20, 2015

Been looking since 5 this morning all over town! Thank the heavens we found a marble at wright park, my 3 1/2 is was very excited and had been such a good sport. Still hoping for that orb or medallion, so glad we found a marble, thank you marbleman!
• first time hunters February 20, 2015

This was my family's and I first-time shine and we definitely got the fever. I made sure to monitor the tweeter feeds and this article and when the posts came in we we're so excited to see what everyone was finding and how beautiful everything was. We were lucky that we all found something on one of our many hunts. It was great to explore Tacoma and take the time to actually "see" this city instead of just hustling to our destination. Reminds me of one of the reasons I wanted to move here so badly. Thank you to everyone who contributed a treasure to be found and thank you to the searchers who got out to explore Tacoma and showed this city's personality by being friendly and helpful to other hunters and the areas in which you hunted, ie picking up trash and just visiting places. We got inspired after our search and set out glass pebbles and little marbles (sorry marbleman for stealing your thunder but we aren't artistic and it was a quick decision) in some places for others to find. We are hoping to continue that next year with our own artifact to hide. Again just wanted to say thank you and wish everyone luck on their search for #monkeyshines, marbles, cups, bottles, 12th rams, giant octopi, ladybugs and anything else they should find!!!!
• Bringing the herd February 20, 2015

We hunted yesterday for quite awhile. I got to spend two hours with my teenager, and that alone made my day. Randomly, he and I found a geocache, so that was pretty neat. My younger kids are determined to find one of the octopi. Any ideas on where to narrow down the search? To all the people we chatted with yesterday, I hope you had as much fun as we did.
• Today was a good day February 20, 2015

As my name states yes, today was a good day. I knew there were a lot put out ms monkey said 3000. But I had to work yesterday, so I woke up early this morning. Went looking. Bam after 2 hrs out found a beautiful greenish orb. At a Chinese Resturant on McKinley. Wow, so proud I looked there last nite too but nothing was there I swear. So they must of put more out today. Thank you ms monkey and tame am for this beautiful orb. I'll love it forever.
• Terencio February 20, 2015

Found glass and a ram cup on Pacific & 80th! The hunt continues!
• Happy Family February 20, 2015

This is our 4th year hunting for Monkeyshines and we look forward to it every year even though we have never found anything...until this year! My 10yr old found a tea cup with a Ram at the roundabout on Stevens near Sherman Elementary yesterday morning. My 6yr old found a beautifully carved stone green heart with a sheep on it in one of the Lions mouth at the Chinese Reclamation Park this morning...even though we looked in that exact spot yesterday! I would post pictures because they are truly amazing, beautiful, and so unique, but I cannot do that here and don't know where else I can. I have never posted a comment before, but I just had to so I can thank the person who left our treasures for us. Myself, my Husband and our 2 boys have never even seen a glimpse of glass-or even a marble-in the 4 years of searching, but we always have tons of fun running from spot to spot and meeting all the other searchers! I work downtown with a clear view the Spanish Steps, which I did walk up and down and scan yesterday, and then watched a gentleman pull out a lovely orange orb I just missed! :( (so close!) I would love it if my 2 boys could find an orb or medallion, some of Marble man's lovely marbles, or (their truly coveted) a Giant Octopus! But finally finding something this year because of all of the other people pitching-in and distributing such a variety of objects is truly amazing! We finally have a treasure to love and keep forever to remember "Monkeyshine time in Tacoma" when they are older! I was so worried we would come up empty handed again this year, and it could be the last year, that I went out and got 2 shiny green decrative balls that the boys could find and I stenciled a Ram head on them by hand! Now that we have "real" treasures I think we will pay it forward by hiding the objects I made for someone else to find (wish I could post a picture of those too because they really came out cool!) I personally would do my own little happy dance if I (by some miracle) found a piece from last year. I couldn't go last year because I had an epidural abcess and had to have surgery to remove the disk in my neck before it damaged my spinal cord. I was so looking forward to going last year because the horse has got to be my favorite of all of the Chinese Zodiacs, but I could hardly walk so it just wasn't an option. I know it is more about the journey than the find, and last year proved that when I couldn't even go look, but it was getting hard to convince the boys that I wasn't crazy and that there really are objects hidden! We really have never seen a glass piece in person (or for that matter any of the pieces shown on this page-from 12th man, to marbles, to the giant octopus)! And we search, every park, statue, fountian, school we can. The boys get dirty and dig around in every bush we see. Daddy climbs trees and statues. We go out at all times of the day and night and do nothing but look down and up in bushes and trees while outside for weeks. The only thing we haven't been able to do is get up in the middle of the night on the night they first go out, but we are up and out by 7am which is still early. But finally our faith and diligence paid off this year, we found something! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, to all of the "Monkey Cousins" who are making it possible for us all to have a treasure of our own. And just one more thing...this year is particularly special for my 10yr old because his football team are the Rams!...just wish I could top it off for him by finding a glass piece with the Ram (then we could re-hide one of the objects we found, I think the heart would be fun to pass on)! Thank you Ms. Monkey for starting this awesome tradition for so many of us, and please please keep going, I know that most of us will do whatever it takes to suppport this event and keep it going forever! :)
• Raineydz February 20, 2015

Went looking at the "wrong" spots yesterday & last night, but ran into some very nice folks! A dad was with his two young daughters & showed us the orb they had found at a park across Annie Wright--to top it off, it was the gal's birthday yesterday. Did find some cool Chinese New Year ornaments at Wright & Kandle Park. I confess, I am orb-obsessed about now......just one.... ;-)....must go out again tonight and tomorrow! Thanks Tacoma!
• Justin February 23, 2015

That was us! I hope you had luck finding a ball. If not I'm sure there are still some more out there!
• Carly in Central Tacoma February 20, 2015

In as much as I would love to find an orb one of these years, I am grateful to simply be on the hunt! We may never find even a marble, or win a Pickle Hunt prize, or start a Beautiful Angle collection, but man, do we love Tacoma for these traditions. Yesterday we hunted in Wapato with my in-laws and today was we did some light searching at Franklin Park. I say light because my daughter is under 2 - we walked the entire park, but I only left the helm of our stroller to peak into some of the storm drains near the community garden. Tomorrow we will be out with the whole extended family again at another great park. Thank you to Ms. Monkey for being a glass-wielding wizard and getting the city outside in winter. That in itself is the best gift.
• Lisa N February 20, 2015

Ok, so a little behind this year and want to go out this afternoon with my 6 year old. Am I too late??
• never say die! February 20, 2015

never too late! Get out there :)
• T & N February 20, 2015

I ve enjoyed this year of hunting far more than any other. Last year was kinda crazy... Anyway, I still have a couple geodes, thunder egg chunks and 3 small fossils that I will place out there tonight for everyone that has been working or just hasn't been lucky yet. Keep looking, I found my horse medallion 4 days later. Good luck happy hunting.

• CourtneyLooHoo February 20, 2015

This is my first year ever hunting... and it's super fun. I've been out everyday this week and taken my kids out a few times too. No luck on finding any treasures, although my daughter did find a small marble. Hoping to take my boys out so they can find some too. I'm dying to find an orb! I wonder if I'm just not good at looking haha. Well I just want to thank everyone for all their hard work. This is an amazing project and I hope it continues. I already know what I want to leave for hunters next year! P.s. any tips are appreciated. Happy hunting!
• vindiculus February 20, 2015

Going out tomorrow morning with my boys! Can't wait to hunt!
• The Hunter February 20, 2015

• Michelle February 20, 2015

Yes, Hunter. That was us. I remember visiting with you and your wife. Did you guys have any more luck last night or today?
• The Hunter February 21, 2015

• Happy D February 20, 2015

Same here, I've been walking all morning afternoon and evening with anyone who will go with me for two weeks. It's so fun and gets out of the house. I love this time of year.
• Late Bloomer February 20, 2015

I was amazed to find this little guy (a glittery baby rhino) around 6 PM today at the Wright's Park pond. This is my first hunt as I just heard about this last night on the news and I can't believe I found one! What an adventure… I met some really nice people today who were also looking which made it less strange looking through the bushes and trees. I hope this isn't the last year - This was really fun and exhilarating!
• soccermom February 20, 2015

My son found one outside his school on Thursday. He wasn't even looking. His teacher from a few years ago found one out searching in the morning, also. Love the connections that these bring. Thank-you Monkeys
• Morgan February 21, 2015

We found a beautiful float, our first one! In the waterfall on N 4th and Yakima! We love Tacoma! I started jumping up and down I am so full of joy! Thank you monkeys!
• MrWizard February 21, 2015

Hey Morgan. So was the float you found mostly clear like the one that Fawn rehid?
We found a beautiful float, our first one!  In the waterfall on N 4th and Yakima! We love Tacoma!  I started jumping up and down I am so full of joy!  Thank you monkeys!
nope, that one wasn't mine.
• MrWizard February 22, 2015

Well, my fiancee and I have now logged 20 solid hours of searching for Monkeyshines and have still come up empty. We figured out exactly where you took the picture by Stadium with your orb however we've scoured a 5 block radius including all water features and still up empty handed... Pretty please, any other hints? We are starting to go crazy here. Thanks in advance
nope, that one wasn’t mine.
I am no longer sure if it's still there, but if it is, you'll want to bring something you don't mind getting really wet in.
• Happy Family February 23, 2015

Are you no longer sure it it there because the tide could have taken it out or because someone might have found it?
• Craftycrafter February 21, 2015

This is my first year, headed out to Point Defiance today. No physical treasures, but got my daughter to tag along and we had never been there before (new to the area) it is a amazing park! We had a wonderful time searching, and talking. The park was empty though. I hope to go out early tomorrow morning for a bit, as everyone else here has said it would be nice to find a beautiful treasure to bring home. This year I feel blessed that I am able to be out there hunting! Thank you to everyone involved in this! Pisst... Any hints on where to start tomorrow would be so verry appricated!

I saw some hunters out on Hilltop this morning.
• Jason February 21, 2015

I just recently heard about this and would love to take my kids out looking for a treasure. Not really sure where to start looking though. I live by Stewart middle school, any chance that treasure will be hidden in our area? This is a really cool thing that all of you do, hopefully it can continue.
• J & M February 21, 2015

We've heard reports of people finding stuff along Pacific Ave up around 38th. Look everywhere like flower pots and bushes and trees.
• J & M February 21, 2015

Went out yesterday and found a Ram ornament and a sweet Be Kind piece. Also having fun still finding marbles and moving them to new places for other people to find. Almost left our Be Kind piece for a guy we named Grouchy because he was talking to someone on his phone about how he hadn't found s*** yet but we didn't think he would truly appreciate it. Thank you again, Ms. Monkey and all of those hiding fun things for others to find.
• Giant Pacific Octopus February 21, 2015

We love you, Tacoma! Keep your eyes (and your hearts) open. The adventure continues.
• Seeker February 21, 2015

Thank you Giant Pacific Octopus!!! Success after 5 years of searching for a treasure, we found a beautiful gold and green octopus on Pacific.
• Still searching February 21, 2015

Any clue as to what part of town to search? Kiddis and I are having a blast being outside, searching together!
• LooperSix February 21, 2015

Kids and I were out looking for octopi this morning. We did not find any but had a blast exploring Pt. Defiance and Puget Park...after we warm up a little we might go out again. As we were driving home the kids and I were thinking about what we could make and hide next year. Thanks Tacoma for such a great tradition
• max~n~me February 21, 2015

Max and I went out this morning looking didn't find anything but got to explore Fireman's Park, Thea Park, and walked the waterfront around the glass museum. We had a great walk met nice people and puppies and loved getting to know Tacoma more. Might go out later to hunt some more for some shine treasures or just to meet more nice people. :)

A BIG THANK YOU to Ms Monkey!!! You have been a inspiration to so many and brought so much happiness!! Thank you to everyone who has joined in to make this Monkeyshine time such a wonderful time! So many nice people sharing smiles and stories while on their adventures around Tacoma. Marble Man you made my 4 years day when she found a marble while out walking around!! We truly hope this continues and the 12th Man Sisters would love to help in any way we could to keep it going!! THANK YOU again to EVERYONE!! Keep exploring our beautiful city there are so many adventures to be had!!

looking at Northeast Tacoma and Brownspoint today no luck at the lighthouse fun though. any hints?
• Sea2sky February 21, 2015

A big thank you to all who have made this such an amazing hunt and inspired so many people to get out and enjoy our wonderful town. It has been lovely to read about (and see pics of) all the treasures found. My kiddos and I have walked almost 20 miles so far since Thursday in search of the elusive orb and they still want to keep going.
• Derek staff February 21, 2015

Received via email: "Found my first ever float this morning, see pic. I LOVE it but am a bit worried about a couple of big cracks in it. Is there anything I can do, besides being very gentle, to help it survive? The only other time I've found a Monkeyshine was a medallion 2 yrs ago (Year of the Snake) and it spontaneously shattered into multiple chunks one night on my desk at work, less than a week after I found it. I was told it probably hadn't been annealed (sp?) properly... but I don't know anything about glass making. Any suggestions, Tacoma glass lovers?"
• Kelli February 21, 2015

Found a beautiful dragonfly ate piece hanging off a tree branch off 38th and Pacific. Thanks for everyone who made this year great!!
• Ms. Monkey February 21, 2015

Thank-you Tacoma for embracing The Monkeyshine Project for the past 12 years, and for all of the Monkeys known and unknown that have added to the fun. Thank-you seekers for posting your finds, helping other to hunt, and for the general love and merriment that you have spread around. Your joy is infectious. THANK YOU TACOMA ARTS COMMISSION for your generous support of this project. You rock! Spread the love all year round T-town...you are beautiful. Sincerely, Ms. Monkey
• The Hunter February 21, 2015

Thank you Ms. Monkey for all you do!! Thanks to the Tacoma Art Commission and every body involved!! I'm glad to have been allowed to purchased the candle holder earlier, maybe have more fundraisers for next year( if this event continues). Thanks again, The Hunter
• Jennifer February 21, 2015

Thank you Tacoma artists! Thursday night my kids and I went out for a bit and I found a glass ball at 5:30 PM at Lincoln HS. Later, my daughter found a pottery cup at a school (don't recall name) near entrance in a flower pot. Then this morning the four of us headed out and my husband found a pottery piece at 8th & I ST park, then an ornament at McKinley Park. We had fun hunting in the dark and daylight.
• HaNk February 21, 2015

Went out early Thursday morning after one was reported at Pacific and 38th. Looked around for awhile up and down 38th. Saw a couple find one and was talking with them and they wished me luck as they got back in there car. Turned the corner and found one right outside Lincoln Hardware. Brought it home and now it resides next to my Monkeyshine Project Ram Candle Cup.
• Marty February 21, 2015

What a great year for Monkeyshines!! Just spoke to the owner of Jubliee in the Lincoln District and he said that yesterday was a record day as many 'Shiners dropped in to refuel before heading back out. He said it was a joy to watch so many many people weaving in around his bushes and parking lot, looking high and low. He shared the story of one couple with disabilities that told him they had not been out on a walk together for over 5 years, but came out in search of glass orbs. They almost had tears in their eyes.
• Tacoma is the Treasure February 21, 2015

Three days of looking and didn't find any physical objects, but I had a lot of fun along the way! I have been all over the city and have climbed into numerous trees and bushes (adults need to feel like a kid again sometimes, too) plus met nice people who were out on the hunt. I recently moved to Tacoma from the Midwest, and Monkeyshines has only deepened my love for this place. Thanks to everyone who made this event happen!
• JustAGinger February 21, 2015

Looked high and low from 11th to 15th, Broadway to Pacific, and Foss waterway and found nothing. A little disappointed but it was a fun first time!
• baseballmom February 21, 2015

i have searched high and low on all of my lunch breaks this week, and tonight at Jefferson park with a flashlight. It's a sickness! I am determined to find something. Anything. Also, if this wonderful tradition continues, my 19 year old who has blown glass for 8 years will help in any way he can!
• Runner Mom February 22, 2015

This runner still leaving things behind. A Monkeyshines message bottle will reappear today .... Some time .... Somewhere.
• Happy Happy Joy Joy February 22, 2015

What a GREAT day! I found one carved heart at the waterfront, nine medallions (along waterfront, and all around Pt. Defiance) and this cute little octopus holding a globe (in sculpture at a small park not far from opera alley). Kept the octopus. During my adventures, I saw six raccoons (5-mile drive), three deer (Pt. Defiance), one loud tree frog and a low flying eagle glided over me (Japanese gardens), Oh and one reindeer ... (Yes, I said one reindeer… It was at the fence at the zoo), a little puffed out bird popped out of a bush and sat next to me for a while (dock street), team of squirrels (Wright's Park) and it ended at Titlow beach with a beautiful sunset. Found several little parks I hadn't heard of before. I met lots of nice people. Got lots of exercise, and got kicked out by Mr. Police Officer (with my new found friends who had flashlights) who informed us that Pt. Defiance was closing...as we explained to him on our way out what Monkeyshine was... yah we had good laughs...What a fun day!
• RSHR February 22, 2015

Are the medallions all year of the Ram and did you take them? If so, you are kinda going against the rules of only taking 1. Be kind to the others please and if you did take them, please re hide. Thanks.
• Happy happy joy joy February 22, 2015

I only kept the octopus and left the rest where I found them.
• RSHR February 22, 2015

AWESOME!!! Thanks
• Happy happy joy joy February 22, 2015

I only kept the octopus and left the rest where I found them.
• Farmerswufe February 22, 2015

i purchased a few of the fundraiser cups. They are now hidden. Good luck hunters.
• J & M February 22, 2015

Apologies if this is a duplication. I tried to post earlier but I don't see it. Trying again. We did see a family find a stuffed something at Fireman's Park yesterday morning around 8:00am-ish. My husband thinks it was pink maybe. The boy who found it was very excited. If this was your chicken, I believe it has found a happy home, if it doesn't make it back to you. Good luck.
• Lovstolaf February 22, 2015

Thank you so much, J & M. I don't think it was mine because I didn't get to Fireman's until Saturday afternoon. What a strange coincidence. I really appreciate your letting me know. :-). Fingers still crossed.
• J & M February 23, 2015

Doh! That should be a thumbs up, not a thumbs down. Can't get it to change. You are very welcome and good luck. :-)
• Ms. Ladybug February 22, 2015

Did she just say she found and took 9 medallions!!!?!!! Ummm i surely hope not. 1 per seeker. Be kind and choose the 1 u wish to keep an rehide the other 8. People who work during the week are looking on the weekend and it would be nice to know there are still things out there. I hid 10 more ladybugs this morning. Keep looking!
• 2big February 22, 2015

They only took the octopus. If you read the post again it mentions that the octopus was kept and they also clarified to another person on that thread. Happy Happy Joy Joy, you seem to be an expert hunter! I also found more than one on my search, I only took one but I did pick the others up just to look - who could resist! Thanks Ms. Ladybug and everyone else who added to the fun.
• J & M February 22, 2015

There's still a lot of stuff out there. Just this morning we found and re-hid two "Be Kind Grant" pieces and some Ram ornaments. Are there glass medallions this year like there was last year or is what I'm calling an ornament (circle with ram stamp and ribbon) what other people are calling a medallion? We saw marbles this morning too.
• max~n~me February 22, 2015

Any hints on where you saw some of the treasures I was just getting ready to head out again to hunt haven't had any luck this year but did meet some very nice people and explored some new parts of Tacoma. :)
• J & M February 22, 2015

We were wondering around the Stewart Middle School area, Dock Street, WA State History museum, and some places downtown to name a few areas. Heard rumors from a security guard also recommending Dock Street, Wright Park, and Pebble Beach.
• J & M February 22, 2015

Oops! That would be *wandering*. :-)
• Craftycrafter February 22, 2015

Wow I'm glad to see there are still treasures to be found! I was planning to head back out early Saterday morning, but I was not able to. I guess all the walking the previous day got me. (I have had 6 minor back surgeries) the Friday that I spent out was wonderful! Walking through the beautiful park with my daughter, I can't remember the last time I had been on a long walk (due to my back) now I remember why). I think maybe I might try to go tomorrow for a bit, just not as long. Good luck to everyone! Again thank you to everyone especially Ms Monkey! It is an amazing thing you have started here!
• Luxx February 22, 2015

Yes there are medallions out this year also the size varies I think. My group found 2 in different sizes some just big enough to get a stamp on it some like normal sizes and more colorful than ever. They were hard to find. Tucked beside a trash can and tree hole. But I know there more out there. I think monkeys just put out at different stages. I'd say check the water area I know they float.
• Urban Farmer February 23, 2015

I went out to collect eggs this morning only to discover a beautiful grey & brown ram tile in one of the nests. Thank you, Hilltop Monkey!! I will definitely re-hide it in one of my cherished Tacoma haunts.

So glad you found it! It was there for 2days before you found it! Great Job, enjoy!
• E & D February 23, 2015

We just moved to Tacoma 2 weeks ago, knowing nothing about Monkeyshines. Walking to work on Thursday morning, I noticed people with flashlights and asked one woman what she was looking for. She was kind enough to tell me about Monkeyshines and not 1 minute later I stumbled onto a beautiful orb on the glass bridge! I'm not usually lucky, but that day I was simply in the right place at exactly the right moment. Thank you Ms. Monkey and all the monkeys and other artists who work so hard on this amazing effort. You are generous beyond belief and the joy you've created is just wonderful. I love that "the hunt" brings us all together and gets us talking to strangers we'd normally never interact with. We are now Monkeyshine converts and are having a blast exploring our new city to try to find my husband an orb. Keep it up monkeys!
• jkoecke2002 February 23, 2015

Went for a walk\exploration at Wapato Lake, unfortunately i was unable to find anything.
• Derek staff February 23, 2015

Received via email: "I found this one the front walkway of our house this Afternoon. It's puzzling because the image looks More like a clam or scallop than a ram. I wonder What the explanation is? Thanks mrs. Monkey or Whomever put it there."
• Derek staff February 23, 2015

Received today via email: "I found this treasure on my run through Wright Park this morning. Makes those early morning runs worth it!"
• Oma#7 February 23, 2015

So ---need to know--should I still be looking? Have gone to Pt. Defiance, Wapato, Star Center, Asian Pacific Rec Center, Exotic Gardens, Boat House Owens Beach........ no luck but a good healthy walk. Thanks this is great. My granddaughter loves the night walks with the flashlight but would love to find something.
• Fourheadedsnake February 23, 2015

I'm guessing if they hid 3000 glass pieces -- and uncounted other pieces, there must be more to find! I wonder what percentage of people write about it? We hid 14 photo art cards on 6th and near the zoo today. We're hoping to hear that some were found. :)
• J & M February 24, 2015

We were thinking it was a total of 3000ish pieces, not 3000 glass pieces. I think I got that idea from the News Tribune. Last year I think I read 500 orbs and 500 medallions which was double the year before if I am remembering my details correctly so 3000 glass pieces seems like more than they would do especially if the other art pieces are being produced. I'm betting there is still glass to be found though!
• dustin February 24, 2015

I think the number is closer to 2,000 glass pieces. A Naughty Monkey went over some of the numbers on twitter with me. 200 teacups, 115 of the other pots, 200 goat head clay medallions. That doesn't count the bottles and the grant school kids. I think you're safe to keep looking, but the longer you wait, the harder it will become. Think outside the box a little and dig deep (not literally, I hope....). My first find, last year, was from a previous year, in a somewhat easy to see spot on thea foss way. And I think another from that prior year was found, just this year. Good luck, have fun!
• Ms. Monkey February 24, 2015

Dustin is correct. About 2000 assorted "Monkey Balls" (called that by Monkeyshiners, no matter the year) and medallions went out. 200 glass bottles. about 1000 clay items, 500 paper Ram ornaments, countless 12th Man Sister's Rams, Octopi, Marbles from Marbleman, and LOADS of community-driven gifts to the magnificent community members of Tacoma. Try thinking..."where would I hide something"? And don't worry if you come up empty handed...the treasure is what you make of it. Keep hunting, I've stalked a few I've hidden and they are still out there!
• Seeker February 24, 2015

Thank you Ms. Monkey! That gives me hope that my daughter can still find a treasure, she is a ram and turning twelve soon, she's says it's her year. My treasure is that I get to search with her and see our amazing city.
• J & M February 25, 2015

Wow! Thank you for the information, Ms. Monkey! You and your crew have done so much work! It is appreciated and so much fun. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We will definitely keep looking. I've found mine, but my husband hasn't found his yet.
• Dalshine February 24, 2015

A friend found a Monkeyshine today in a parking lot on the waterfront. It was hidden in plain sight! It was really important to her because she was born in the year of the sheep. I went out on Thursday with two other people and we were lucky enough to find Monkeyshines in the hilltop/downtown area. I went out Friday night with my boyfriend and he found a clay pot in Old Town (his first time looking). Thank you Ms. Monkey for the years of memories, adventures, and the occasional treasure.
• 1 of 11 February 24, 2015

Try thinking…“where would I hide something”? Lol, At this point I would hide it on the tip of my own nose. I absolutely LOVE this event! However: It's the 12th yr, unknown number of hrs, days and nights and still I have never found anything. But I now have not only my children, but also my grandchildren super excited about trying to find a Monkeyshine.
• Raineydz February 24, 2015

Late post...went out again in search of the elusive orb/medallion...did a LOT of walking, talking, had a great time & even found a great Mexican restaurant! Got a lot of mileage in...and finally found an orb by Tacoma Mall ;-)
• SMILE February 24, 2015

We would just like to share we found a goat head clay medallion and a Monkey Ball today! The Medallion was found on 6th Ave. and Union and the Monkey Ball in the ivy over at Mary Bridge Hospital. We would like to give a "BIG THANK YOU" to everyone who helped make this event such a success! You've given our family the opportunity to create memories that will last for years to come.
• FastMomma February 25, 2015

So Ms. Monkey and Tacoma. Thank you! My girls and I were out on our Saturday morning hunt. We found a very cool medallion on the bridge in the Chinese Reconciliation Park. The bridge we had just walked across and did not see anything. We were excited to have found something. We returned home to a sad phone call. Grandma had just passed away. She passed pretty much the same time we found that medallion according to the nurse. A beautiful moment stamped forever in our memories.
• Obsessed February 27, 2015

I accept that the majority have been found, but i cant give up hope. Were any of them hidden really well, like you would have to move stuff around to find them, or are they pretty much visible from at least one vantage point?
• !2th Man Sisters February 27, 2015

I do believe that some are hidden well, to be found by surprise when least expected, stumbled upon by chance. Don't give up they can be found when least expected and always in public places!!
• Craftycrafter February 27, 2015

Good evening all! Well I got the chance to get back out this afternoon. Boy do I know how to pick em! It was raining when I startes at firemens park, then it got colder and super windy. Very cold for a Texas gal like me lol. Thank goodness for Starbucks
• Smile February 28, 2015

Found one of the 14 art cards today on 6th Ave.
• first-time-around February 28, 2015

Just found out about monkeyshines on Monday, went looking for 3 hours and found mine in the crotch of a tree in Wright Park! Right after my roommate and I spend the next 5 hours scouring Tacoma parks, I'm looking to find one for his 31st birthday tomorrow and surprise him with it. He was sooooo stoked that I found one, he said it gave him hope. He found a moonsnail shell with a poem in it in point defiance by the pagota shrine in a Japanese maple. Dunno if that was something left behind by someone else. Was a poem about buying peaches. Hahahha. Any clues? Much appreciated!!!!! Aaaand is U.P. considered Tacoma hiding territory still??
• Angella March 1, 2015

Going out to scour downtown Tacoma with the whole family on this beautiful day! We still have hope!
• Wren March 1, 2015

If I were you guys I would search the Pagoda, maybe you'll find a treasure I left behind, (hint hint)
• Angella March 1, 2015

Wren we found a three small treasures. My sons each kept one and re-his the third for someone else to find.
• Debbie March 1, 2015

Where did you find your little treasures.... We did Ruston Waterfront from Chinese bridge to the Lobster Shop. And also parts of the Wapato Park near the playground and waterfall. We started late... so want to do this next weekend with my daughter.
• first-time-around March 2, 2015

Keep looking everybody! I went to Jefferson Park yesterday at about 3 o' clock and found the mysterious blue bottle in a recess between a part of the tree base of the grand Sequoia tree! Haven't opened the bottle yet! Keep looking everybody!
• JJ March 6, 2015

I found a ceramic cup in a bush outside a store this afternoon. Photo on Twitter under #monkeyshines.
• Michelle C. March 10, 2015

Ms. Monkey, Are there any more treasures out there? I have been searching everywhere I go, and no luck. Michelle
• first-time-around March 12, 2015

Well, I figured if its this far out after the night of sacred hiding, I should try and find where previous year's ones might still be hiding. I believe Ms. Monkey said that she knows for a fact that there are ones still out there that she has gone back to check, and are still there. Today, hiked Jane's Gulch. Which is a beautiful park, nonetheless, has to be the most neglected park I have ever seen. With a little work, it could be a diamond in the rough. Nothing there, and I did search the paths of great disrepair - which also may have been game trails, hahaha. Also, just now leaving Place of Circling Waters, and on to a few others today. Any suggestions from previous sacred night monkeys? I'm always up for a challenge! Riddles work too :) thank you again!
