Time to Bring Back the Citizen's Hotel Corporation?
When the Winthrop was originally built, it was primarily funded by a subscription fundraising model whereas the citizens of Tacoma could help build the grand hotel they thought their city needed. Thousands of average folks gathered their money to make the hotel a reality.
Now, some eighty years later, that hotel is in the center of a debate about the future of our city. The question is, is it time to bring the community investment model out of the closet, spruce it up a bit, and lay it out as an option for the Winthrop? Exit133 can’t buy the Winthrop. Our bank accounts are a bit too thin for that. However, if the readers of Exit133, our friends, neighbors, and businesss associates, all consider the Winthrop to be a vital part of our city’s core, maybe there’d be enough people with enough resources to pull it off. This idea has come up a few times in the comments section. How much are you willing to risk on the Winthrop?
