Tollefson Plaza Boat Race on Thursday!
We know you want to activate Tollefson Plaza. So … here’s one more opportunity.
We just heard that on Thursday at noon there will be a boat race in Tollefson Plaza. Bring a boat that you’ve made, bought, or borrowed. The race starts at 12:20. Boats will start at the top of the fountain and (hopefully) head downstream from there. There will be prizes (read cheap trophies and paper certificates) for such “winners” as:
- fastest boat
- slowest boat
- ugliest boat
- prettiest boat
- boat that capsizes first
- boat that takes out the most other boats
- boat with the best special effects
- etc
Any type of boat is welcome, including rubber duckies (which we’re counting as a boat for this event). Bring it on!

Dave, I’ll lend you this amazing Kalakala model boat I find myself in possession of if you’re interested.
It does need a replacement clam-shell door however, frost park fountain hasn’t been kind to her.

This ‘Dave’ needs to pass on the opportunity – and good luck to all the participants – maybe the event needs to be called Small Ships Tacoma? (and pity there isn’t a bridge over the fountain so you can play a proper game of Pooh Sticks).

After checking this afternoon by a contest we have discovered the fountain has been turned off. Please stay tuned for updates. We will be trying to get it working for this Thursday’s race.
Perhaps someone has suggestions?

that should be “by a contestant”

We have been assured by the City that the fountain will be running so please join us! If for nothing else than to fill the fountain with boats and perhaps get some nice photographs.

(Almost missed this cool thread.)
Making it into Tacoma at noon again might be tough for me. However I wouldn’t mind at all if Captain Anderson would wish to take the helm of the Frost Park Kalakala for this event, and if someone took pictures.

Thanks to all who joined us! We’ll let you know when we do this again…after we’ve all had time to modify our boats to overcome the design challenges :)

We just missed the event today. I’ll get a boat ready for next time.

The race was a fun event. Thanks for putting it together Caroline. We were happy to take the fastest boat trophy (proudly displayed in our lobby) even though our boat floated at about the same rate as the other ones.
I’m up for an annual “Small Ships Regatta”

As the “outsider” who joined from seeing this posting – it was a small group AND a fun time. I have my boat and trophy for prettiest boat proudly displayed on my desk at Wells Fargo.
