Tonight: Tacoma Historical Society Meeting and Awards

Here’s a little something for Tacoma history buffs; tonight (April 9), the Tacoma Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at the University of Puget Sound. At the meeting, local historian Ronald E. Magden will speak; the topic is “1929 Tacoma: The First Showing of a Rare Film.” At the meeting, the Society will also present its 2012 Murray Morgan and Alan Liddle awards.

The Alan C. Liddle Award, which “recognizes individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the preservation of Tacoma’s historic structures” was established in 2007, and first awarded to Alan C. Liddle and Patricia Sias in 2008.

The first recipient of the Murray Morgan Award, which recognizes “recognizes individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to efforts to preserve and communicate local history” was Murray C. Morgan in 1992. Since then, it has been awarded annually, with the 2011 award going to Deb Freedman for her work to publish her book Tacoma’s Twenty-one Tales Every Student Should Be Able to Tell. We haven’t read that one yet, but it sounds like a fun read.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
