Topping the Multicare Boiler
The MultiCare Boiler and Emergency Generator Facility across the street from Wright Park is nearing exterior completion, including the topping out of the venting stacks. Do you remember our old discussions? (search)
Todd Kelley at Multicare has sent us several photos of the facility. The pictures were taken from some common views and angles, with the exception of the last two photos. These are taken from the top floor of the Jackson Hall Parking Garage on MLK. It’s about even with the final height of the venting stacks and provides us with an idea of height and size in relation to the nearby structures and the current stack.
The exterior of the facility will be complete “by the time winter arrives” and will be in full use in January.

Those are a lot smaller than I thought they would be.
Looks like pix #3 is from the same angle as the drawing.

I have been told “eventually” by our construction and engineering folks. We’re probably going to finish our construction projects first. The new ER is opening in early 2010.

Shorter stacks = good
Now if we can just get Metro Parks to plant some nice, tall and very fast growing Poplars right along the street there…

I don’t understand all the fuss. Looks good! Plus, this is a hospital that provides medical care for everyone in Tacoma. Do any of you think you might need medical care in the next 50 years?
I think it’s a great job balancing athestics and need for the hospital. If I need medical care; I know that even in a power outage, I’m safe at Tacoma General.

I was out jogging around the park yesterday and I saw them working on this Sunday, the 14. Which I thought was amazing. Also, it doesn’t look bad at all. I especially like the “Voltas” and “Watt” engraved above the windows. Gives the building some (fake) heritage.

Yes, I think GBJ architects (Also did Allenmore C) did a great job with the latest, classic design, and probably not an easy building and mechanical/electrical systems to construct. Not that 3 or 4 matters, but I don’t think it has been mentioned that there’s a space for a future fourth boiler and stack south of those three.

You are correct. There is space for a fourth boiler. But, it will be one of the smaller ones and not another large one, which means two of each size. Only one boiler will be running at any given time, however. One of the larger ones in the winter and the smaller in the summer. Redundant systems in case one is down or not available for some reason.
I agree GBJ did do a great job with the modifications to the original design.
